Chapter 95
Rocco’s swollen eyes snapped open. His body went rigid.
“Rocco.” Marcus’s voice dropped low. “Did you feed me bullshit? Did you deliberately start a war between
me and Stellaris?”
Rocco’s mouth opened and closed. His hands trembled against the floor.
Ethan continued, his voice unhurried. “I heard him on the phone with Nathan earlier. Nathan and I have history. Bad history. Rocco’s been acting on Nathan’s behalf this whole time.”
Rocco’s face went gray.
‘If I admit it,’ he thought, ‘I’m finished. Right here, right now. In front of Marcus. In front of everyone.’
He gritted his teeth so hard his molars creaked.
“Boss!” Rocco lurched forward on his knees toward Marcus. “Boss, I’ve been with you for years! Years! Everything I’ve done has been for you. This guy shows up out of nowhere, beats people half to death, and now he’s trying to turn you against me?”
His voice rose, frantic and desperate.
“Think about it, boss! Ethan Carter is nothing but a glorified errand boy for Aurora Sinclair. A relationship hire. He’s been in this city for years and nobody’s ever heard of him being able to fight like this. Doesn’t that seem suspicious? If he were really that powerful, why would nobody know?”
Marcus hesitated.
His jaw worked. Rocco’s words made sense. The man had been loyal for a long time. And the logic wasn’t wrong-how could a nobody office worker fight like a trained killer without anyone in the city knowing about it?
Marcus turned back to Ethan. His tone shifted-polite now, but guarded.
“Mr. Carter,” he said carefully. “Whether Rocco lied or deliberately stirred up trouble between us-I’ll investigate that thoroughly. You have my word. I’ll give you a proper answer.” He straightened his collar. For now, I’ll have Rocco detained and looked into. And I’d like to treat you to a drink. As an apology. Does
that work?”
Rocco’s chest swelled. He shot Ethan a look of barely concealed triumph.
‘Stable,’ he thought. ‘I’m stable.’
Ethan shook his head.
Marcus blinked. “No?”
“I said earlier,” Ethan said, his voice flat and cold. “I need an example. Someone to make it crystal clear to
everyone watching that I’m not a man you test.”

His eyes locked onto Rocco. “I already beat him once and was ready to let it go. But he’s still here lying to your face. Still twisting things. Still provoking me.”
“If I walk away now,” Ethan continued, what message does that send? That anyone can come at me, lie about me, and walk away clean?”
Marcus opened his mouth-
“As for whether I’m really Ethan Carter,” Ethan cut in, “that’s simple. Call your sister. Bianca’s met me. She can confirm everything in thirty seconds.”
Rocco’s face went white.
