Chapter 75

ALLISON’S POV

$25 Points

“Aaron, I promise I’ll look at the scripts!” I call out from across the lot, waving at him. He waves back and I smile before turning toward my car. I’m supposed to head to the museum to meet Jessica, and just as I unlock the door, another car door slams nearby.

In the reflection of my side mirror, I catch David stepping out.

I turn around quickly, my heart kicking up because why is he here?

He walks toward me with his same smug expression I remember too well. When he stops in front of me, he smiles and extends his hand. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

I roll my eyes. “What are you now, a stalker? You’re pre-law, so you should-”

“You asked me to get my dad’s approval before taking this car,” he cuts in.

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone. As I watch him unlock it, my mind runs through a dozen things he could be about to show me, but none of them prepare me for what it actually is.

He turns the screen toward me.

“As you can see from this text,” he says, “he’s given me permission to take the car back.” His to mine. “That’s if you can read.”

For a moment, I just stare at the screen. Some things are so ridiculous they don’t even seem possible and this is definitely one of them. The idea that his father would actually give him permission to take my car back feels completely absurd. But the text sitting right there on his phone says otherwise.

I slowly lift my gaze to him. “You’re really this childish?”

“Don’t care what you think about me,” he says, shoving his phone back into his pocket. “Hand over the keys.”

I tighten my grip on them. “You know what? I’m not giving you these keys until I call your dad and hear it from him myself.”

His eyes darken. “I will slap you right now if you think you can waste my time.”

He holds out his hand for the keys, and the look on his face makes it clear he’s not bluffing.

“I’ll get my things out of the car,” I say.

I open the door and start gathering my stuff-the lip gloss and parking ticket from the cup holder, my sunglasses from the center console, the notebook I shoved into the side door pocket, and the tote bag I left on the passenger seat. I check the back seat too, grabbing my jacket before slamming the door shut.

With some of the things stuffed into my purse and the rest clutched in my hand, I shove the key into his palm.

He smirks, jingling it right in front of my face. “Next time, don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”

I don’t say anything but only step away from the car.

He turns back toward his own car, and that’s when I notice someone sitting in the driver’s seat, waiting for

him. He walks over and tosses the keys to her. I shake my head, already putting the pieces together.

She’s probably his new girl. Someone who’s perfectly happy playing slave if it means getting a car out of it.

She steps out for a second, shooting me a dirty look like she already hates me, then slides into the driver’s

seat of the car that used to be mine.

And apparently she’s heard plenty about me, because when she pulls out, she swerves just a little too

close like she’s trying to scare me, maybe even hit me before speeding off behind David’s car.

I let out a slow sigh, frustration and exhaustion settling heavy in my chest.

Normally, I would’ve yelled after them, thrown a few insults their way, and maybe even kicked the damn

car. But today… I just don’t have the energy.

I pull out my phone and dial Justin. I could walk to the museum. I probably should but right now I don’t

trust my legs to carry me anywhere without passing out.

“Baby, what’s up?” he answers.

“Hi, babe.” I exhale slowly. “Can you come pick me up at the theatre lot? Please hurry if you can.”

“Okay. Give me five minutes.”

The line clicks off.

Those five minutes drag longer than any five minutes ever have, but eventually his car pulls into the lot. I

roll my neck, gathering my things before walking over just as he opens the passenger door for me.

I slump into the seat with a heavy sigh, sinking back against the leather.

“Where’s your car?” he asks, eyes narrowing as he stares at me. “Are you okay?”

I shake my head. “David took my car. And no… I’m definitely not okay.”

“David? Which David?”

“Ummm… I don’t think you know any other David who’s egotistical enough to take the car his dad got for me just because I wouldn’t date him.”

A frown creeps onto his face, and his hand lands on my thigh. “He really did that?”

“Yup.”

He exhales, his jaw ticking as he stares out the window. I wonder what’s going through his mind but I know none of it is pleasant.

Finally, he leans in to gently caress my chin. “Don’t worry about it. You can use this one from now on.”

I turn to him. “Then what are you driving?”

“I’ll manage.”

I shake my head. “That’s not cool. Besides, I could just walk and burn some calories in the process.”

He lifts my hand, pressing a soft kiss to the back of it. “I’ll leave the car with you. No walking.”

And just like that, he starts the engine and eases out of the lot. I sneak a glance at him and he’s calm on the surface, but every line of his jaw screams annoyance. For once, I actually want him to go teach David a lesson but knowing the asshole, that would probably end with a lawsuit big enough to erase Justin from

existence.

“There’s an away game in a few days, and Katy’s team is coming with us.”

My eyes widen. “What?”

“Something wrong?” he asks, eyes on the road.

“Katy’s going with you?” I slump back, crossing my arms. “I want to come too.”

“I know you do,” he says, shaking his head. “But Coach won’t budge, not even if I begged for a week

straight.”

“Can’t I just sneak in with the debate team or something?”

“If I thought you could, I would sneak you in.”

I shoot him an annoyed look, even though I know it’s out of his hands. Seriously, can’t Katy let me join the

team even for a day?

“You better not have fun with any of those smart-ass girls,” I mumble.

Justin chuckles, glancing at me. “Is that why you want to come? To keep an eye on me?”

I shrug. “Maybe. Who knows?”

“Allison, you know I’m not like that.” He rests his hand on my thigh again, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Even if I’m not with you, I’m always thinking about you.”
