Ares Barclay spread the thick stack of business cards across the table before pulling Iris down into the seat beside him.

His own phone lay on the tabletop with the screen still lit.

Displayed on it were the photos he had secretly taken of her from the second floor moments earlier.

“They’re too blurry.”

Iris swiped through several of them.

Every single one had been taken while she was speaking onstage.

“You’ll be able to find high–resolution versions from the media.”

“The ones I took aren’t the same.” Ares smiled. “The media’s photos and mine have completely different meanings.”

As he spoke, he casually sorted through the business cards, fanning them out so the company names and owners‘ names were visible.

Just as Iris reached over to gather them back, he gently caught her wrist.

His expression grew serious.

Without hesitation, he swept nearly half of the cards straight into the trash.

“What are you doing?”

Ares didn’t answer immediately. He carefully scanned every remaining name before tossing out several more.

“There.”

“The people I threw away aren’t worth contacting.”

Some of those individuals hadn’t even been invited to the event.

They had simply asked someone else to pass along their business cards, hoping to

The cards were still warm from his hands.

“You finished talking with that employee?”

He had seen the two of them leave the elevator together earlier.

Iris nodded slightly. “She doesn’t know much. If she leaves Capital City today, she’ll probably survive.”

Yolanda had been deeply buried within the organization.

Ares frowned.

“What kind of person would go through this much trouble just to target Venus?”

Putting the remaining business cards into her purse, Iris met his gaze.

“Venus wasn’t originally owned by the Noir family. It belonged to Chairman Carter.”

“The real targets weren’t just me. They were Chairman Carter and me.”

Ares raised an eyebrow. “What does that have to do with you?”

“The short version…” Iris explained calmly, “Chairman Carter and I collaborated on a project. Just as we reached the most critical stage, Chairman Carter was suddenly disfigured. Then Chairman Carter sold the company almost immediately and disappeared from public view.”

Back then, they had planned to jointly develop an entirely new cosmeceutical brand.
