Claire resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
God, he really was an idiot.

If Chloe hadn’t specifically asked her to handle this, she wouldn’t have wasted thirty seconds talking to him.
“Finding those gang members is only a matter of time.”
She spoke slowly, as if explaining something to a child.
“And if those three girls come forward as witnesses?”
Mason’s expression changed. “If that happens…”
“The whole story falls apart,” Claire finished.
Understanding finally dawned on him.
“Oh.” He smacked his forehead. “I get it now.”
Claire waited.
A slow grin spread across Mason’s face.
“This is easy.” He looked across the field toward Iris. “If one video isn’t enough…”
His smile widened.
“I’ll make another one. The kind of video she can never recover from.”
Claire finally relaxed.
Mission accomplished.
She patted his shoulder.

“Good.”
Then she added casually,
“Chloe said she’ll take you to dinner if you pull it off.”
Mason’s eyes lit up instantly.
“Seriously?”
Claire smiled. “Seriously.”

As she walked away, she couldn’t help wondering how someone this stupid had survived twenty years without accidentally setting himself on fire.
Across the field, Iris sat beneath the bleachers beside Sophie.
She looked completely unconcerned.
Which, ironically, was exactly what had everyone else worried.

WE STAY
Chloe was sitting with a group of girls, sipping iced tea when she spotted Claire returning. Setting her cup down, she leaned forward.
“Well?”
Claire dropped into the seat across from her with a smug smile.
“Relax. I gave that idiot more than enough hints. He said he’s putting together an even bigger bombshell video-something that’ll get Iris slapped with a serious disciplinary record. If things go well, she could even get expelled.”
Only then did Chloe’s smile return.
This was what happened when someone crossed her.
Meanwhile, Sophie Bennett was worried Iris might be upset, so she’d confiscated

her phone and placed it beside herself. Then she opened a workbook and dropped
it between them.
“The college entrance exams are right around the corner. We need to focus on studying.”
“I really am fine,” Iris said helplessly.
“I know you’re fine. Then solve this problem.”
Before Iris could protest, Sophie was already shoving another page toward her.
As a result, Iris never touched her phone during the entire class period. She spent the whole time explaining problems.
At first, Sophie had only wanted to distract her.
What she hadn’t expected was that Iris could explain every single question with crystal-clear logic. For several of them, her solutions were even shorter and more elegant than the answer key.
Sophie blinked.
Had she accidentally discovered a low-key academic genius?
After two consecutive PE periods came lunch break.
Since the cafeteria was least crowded at that hour, Sophie dragged Iris along, planning to grab food early and eat back in the classroom.
The girl working the serving line today was the cafeteria manager’s daughter, who had just returned from vacation.
As she scooped food onto Iris’s tray, she kept staring at her.
Even after Iris walked away, the girl was still watching her back.
But it wasn’t just her.

Every person serving food that day seemed to be giving Iris strange looks.
Even Sophie, standing beside her, felt increasingly uncomfortable.
After packing up their lunches, they headed to the register.
The cashier took one look at Iris and muttered under her breath,
“Does your family know what you’re doing?”
Iris stopped.
“What exactly am I doing?”
The woman clearly hadn’t expected to be questioned directly and froze.
Someone beside her quickly tugged at her sleeve.
“Why are you talking to someone like that?”
“Nothing, nothing. Just go.”
The exchange left both girls confused.
Why say half a sentence and stop?
Then Sophie’s eyes widened.
“Wait.”
She grabbed Iris’s arm and hurried back toward the classroom.
“Could this be about that forum post?”
The same thought had already occurred to Iris.
The moment they sat down, both pulled out their phones.
The original poster hadn’t made any updates.

But the number of comments attacking Iris was multiplying at an alarming rate.
Iris scrolled straight to the latest page.
The newest comments read:
“Came here from the video. Shameless and violent too?”
“What kind of delinquent is this? If she doesn’t want to study, get her out of Capital Preparatory Academy.”
“What’s taking the school so long? Expel her already. The evidence is right in your face.”
Video?
Just as Iris was about to message someone for details, a voice came from the classroom doorway.
“Iris Noir. Vice Principal Harris wants to see you.”
Vice Principal Harris stood outside with a face so dark it looked carved from stone.
Without a word, Iris patted Sophie’s hand and followed him down the hall.
Apparently, she wouldn’t need to go searching for this new video after all.
Inside the administrative office were two additional teachers—a man and a
woman.
Both were frowning at a computer screen.
“Look at this!” Harris slammed his palm against the desk repeatedly. “Look at the mess you’ve caused! You’ve dragged the entire school into this!”
In less than thirty minutes, countless people had flooded the school’s website with complaints.
The phone lines were practically melting down.
