“Come on, Vincent. What are you waiting for? Listen to Iris.”

Damian urged his older brother oh. Although iris was the quietest of the three, somewhere along the way she had naturally become the one they all relied on. Whenever she spoke, she always got straight to the point

Without another word, Vincent turned around and headed back. Iris followed close behind, leaving Damian bringing up the rear.

After walking for more than twenty minutes, Vincent noticed something unusual.

“The stairs have leveled out,” he said “This should be the flat section Iris mentioned. It doesn’t feel like we’re climbing anymore.”

As he spoke, he crouched down to examine the steps beneath his feet. Their height hadn’t changed at all, yet somehow the sensation was completely different, as if they were walking on level ground instead of uphill. It explained why they had all sensed the change without thinking much about it.

Iris walked over and knelt beside him to inspect the steps herself.

A moment later, she deliberately stepped onto one of them.

Her pupils contracted.

She looked at Vincent and Damian.

“These steps move. Look carefully at these three.”

The brothers crouched down and, by the faint light from their watches, watched as Iris stepped off the section before calmly stepping back onto it.

At first glance, nothing seemed different The width, texture, and appearance of the steps were identical to all the others.

But upon closer inspection, the three connected steps sank ever so slightly lower than the rest. The movement resembled a primitive elevator, except the shift was so subtle-and occurred in such tiny increments-that it was almost impossible to notice.

“The stairs move?!” Damian exclaimed.

“So that’s why we’ve been walking forever without getting anywhere,” Vincent realized. “Let’s look for a mechanism. If I had to. guess, it’ll probably be circular. People in the United States seem to have an obsession with circles.”

The three of them began searching inch by inch, carefully feeling along the walls.

After quite some time, both Damian and Vincent were beginning to lose hope.

“Vincent, have you actually seen one of these before? You said it’d be round, but look at these walls-they’re rough and uneven Where are we supposed to find a circle?”

“I’ve never seen one myself,” Vincent admitted. “I’ve only heard about it. But no matter how difficult it is, we have to find it.”

Just then, Iris noticed something peculiar beneath her brothers’ feet.

The patterns carved into those steps looked chaotic at first glance, but when viewed from above, they seemed to form some kind of guide.

-She walked over to where they were standing, intending to study the design more closely. However, the moment she stood on the

step, she realized something

You couldn’t see the pattern on the step you were standing on.

The design had been intentionally hidden from anyone looking straight down.

“Brother Vincent,” tris called, “go up five steps and look back at this one.”

He nodded and climbed five steps before turning around.

The instant he saw it, his eyes widened.

“T-That pattern…”

“What is it?” Damian asked eagerly

“That’s the marker,” Vincent said. “I saw something like it once at a neighbor’s house. In the United States, it represents a directional guide. Draw a line upward from where the triangle and the circle intersect-that line points toward the hidden mechanism.”

Damian’s face lit up. “Then we’ve found the clue! Vincent, where does it point? Hurry and take a look!”

“I only overheard someone explaining it back then, so I don’t know all the details,” Vincent admitted. “But I’m certain that symbol is meant to guide us.”

“We’ll search along the direction indicated by the intersection,” Iris said calmly. “Brother Vincent, stay where you are and keep your eyes on the line. Damian and I will search.”

“Got it.”

While Vincent remained on the steps to maintain the viewing angle, Iris and Damian began carefully examining the wall on the left.

Suddenly, Iris’s fingertips brushed against a narrow groove..

It had clearly been carved by hand.

The texture inside the groove was completely different from the surrounding stone. The wall itself was coarse and gritty, but the groove had been polished smooth. Years of repeated contact had worn it down until it felt almost silky.

A faint smile crossed Iris’s face.

“I found it.”
