In Elmer’s heart, she never mattered. No one could compare to anyone else he cared about. The sibling bond she once hoped for was nothing but a joke.

Right now, his fist finally swung toward her.

Just as it was about to hit her face, she moved. She caught his fist in one quick grab.

Then she twisted hard.

“Ouch!”

Elmer screamed as he heard the clear pop of his joint slipping out of place.

Noelle didn’t stop. She kicked straight at his knee.

Elmer dropped to one knee in front of her.

Noelle looked at his pathetic, humiliated pose and smiled in satisfaction.

“Elmer, with skills like yours, you still think you can lay a hand on me? That’s bold.”

Pain shot through him. His eyes were full of shock and disbelief.

How could Noelle fight like this? If she is this strong, why didn’t she ever fight back before?

The Noelle he remembered was weak and easy to bully. Not like this at all.

“I already packed my stuff. I was waiting for you. Anyway, that slap felt great. I won’t bother you two anymore. Bye.”

Noelle slung her backpack over her shoulder and walked off without another glance.

“Elmer, are you okay?” Janice rushed over to hold him.

Elmer’s face looked terrible after being embarrassed in front of the girl he liked. He ground! his teeth and forced out, “I’m fine,” but his eyes stayed locked on Noelle’s back.

He would never let this go.

Noelle dared to shame him. He would make her pay.

Noelle left school and headed back toward Melrose Manor.

When she walked past a long, narrow alley, a group of thugs stepped out. Each one carried a metal pipe.

Elmer limped out from the shadows with Janice holding his arm. His eyes gleamed with revenge. “Noelle, didn’t you think you were so tough? Let’s see if you can fight this many people alone.”

The pain in his wrist and knee kept reminding him of what happened. And it was all because of Noelle.

“You hired people to beat me?” Noelle laughed. “Elmer, you know that’s a crime, right?”

“A crime? You lived off my family for free! We fed you for 18 years! You owe us! You dare hurt me? I’ll beat some sense into you! Go! Break her if you have to–I’ll take the blame!”

Elmer’s twisted face was full of hate. His eyes looked at Noelle like she was his worst enemy.

That look erased the last bit of pity Noelle ever had for him.

She glanced at the thugs rushing toward her. Her head tilted, and a cold, wicked smile tugged at her lips.

“Elmer, maybe this isn’t a good idea,” Janice said in a soft, fakeworried voice. “She is your sister … If she gets hurt for real, what do we do? My face still hurts, but maybe we should forgive her?”

“Sister?” Elmer laughed coldly. “Sister? I only have Viola. Who is she? Just a useless stray we fed for 18 years! My dad and mom said if they didn’t pick Noelle up, she would’ve starved to death!

“She dared to hit us? Don’t worry, Janice. I’ll make her kneel and apologize to you.”

They already imagined Noelle on her knees begging for mercy. Noelle was strong, sure–but she couldn’t fight a whole gang.

But then…

Bang!

“Argh!”

“Ugh!”

One minute later, every thug lay on the ground groaning in pain, unable to get up.

The alley fell silent.
