Liam and Phoebe went quiet. What Noelle said hit straight at the fear and struggle they’d been avoiding.
“I think Whitney’s brother would want his sister to chase her dreams without fear. He wouldn’t want her hiding from the past or living in its shadow.”
Noelle paused, then continued, “Sometimes, letting someone go is the deepest kind of love. It’s also the hardest.”
When Whitney arrived, she saw her parents standing by the school gate. Both of them were lost in thought, their expressions unreadable.
She clenched the application form and walked over.
“Dad… Mom…” Her voice shook. She didn’t dare look up, but Noelle’s words echoed in her head, pushing her to fight for herself just once.
“I’m sorry, but I still want to enlist. It’s my dream. Please … please agree.”
She still didn’t dare raise her head.
Silence followed.
Whitney felt her hope slipping away.
But instead of anger or tears, she heard her mother sigh softly.
Phoebe stepped forward and gently took the crumpled, slightly damp application from Whitney’s clenched hand.
She didn’t read it. She carefully smoothed it out, folded it neatly, and slipped it into her pocket.
Whitney looked up in shock and met her mother’s reddened eyes, which were filled with relief and tenderness.
“Whitney…” Phoebe’s voice trembled, but she stayed steady. “We’ve thought it through. Go ahead.”
Liam looked at Whitney, too. The usually stern man had red–rimmed eyes as well.
He gave her shoulder a firm pat, yet filled with unmistakable affection. He said hoarsely, “Your brother…. was outstanding. And so are you. I’m … proud of you.”
After a pause, as if gathering all his strength, he continued, “Once you’re in the military, give it everything you’ve got! Don’t embarrass your brother! And … stay alive. Come home safe!”
Joy and disbelief crashed into Whitney at the same time.
She stared at her parents, tears spilling out uncontrollably.

Her mouth opened, but no words came. She could only nod again and again.
“I will! I promise! Dad, Mom, don’t worry! I won’t let you down! But…”
Whitney couldn’t understand why their attitude changed so completely.

Phoebe gently wiped away Whitney’s tears and choked out, “Noelle talked to us earlier. She was right. We can’t clip your wings just because we’re afraid of losing you. Your brother … he’d want you to fly as far as you can.”
It was Noelle again.
Whitney felt stunned and deeply grateful.
That girl–someone she wasn’t close to, someone she’d even seen as a rival–had helped her twice, at her most helpless and confused moments.
She turned toward the campus. Noelle was already gone, but those calm, steady eyes felt burned into her
heart.
“Dad, Mom… Thank you! Thank you…”
That last thank–you was meant for Noelle.
Whitney broke down and hugged her parents tightly.
Noelle took Eleanor and Quinna out to eat. When they got back to campus, the counselor called her.
She asked Noelle to come in.
“Noelle, the military drill just ended, and the welcome party is coming up. We would like you to speak as the freshman representative.”
“…No.”
Noelle replied lazily, like it was nothing. “Too much hassle. I’m lazy.”
The counselor was speechless.
She’d just heard Noelle had rejected a special military recruitment offer. Now she didn’t even want to speak at the welcome party. Lazy, yet somehow excellent/at everything.
The counselor rushed to convince her. “Noelle, this is an honor! You’re the standard at Kingstowne University–national SAT’s top scorer and triple crown in military drill. If not you, then who should go?”
“Let second place do it,” Noelle replied calmly.
“No, no!
