Holly noticed them but said nothing, burying her head in her work.

“Noelle! Is it true that the counselor asked you to give a speech at the welcome party as the freshman rep?!”
Noelle dropped into her seat. Eleanor leaned close, eyes shining. “That’s amazing! Every freshman here is going to know you!”
Noelle casually tossed her jacket aside. She sounded as calm as if she were talking about breakfast. “Yeah. It’s just a short speech.”
She opened her laptop at her desk, clearly unimpressed by the honor.
That laid–back reaction stabbed Holly right in the chest. She had heard every word.
A freshman rep speech…
That’s a huge honor!
Why is Noelle acting like she doesn’t care?
Holly sneered, unable to hold back. “Quit acting all high and mighty. You’re probably thrilled deep down. You only got that spot because of Mr. Menzie’s connections and that SAT top score, right? Otherwise, why would they ever pick you?”
Eleanor snapped instantly. “Holly, what’s wrong with you? If you can’t say anything nice, then shut up!
“Ability?” Holly stood up, grabbed her water bottle, and shot Noelle a/mocking glance. “Who knows?”
With that, she turned and walked out of the dorm without looking back.
“She’s crazy!” Eleanor stomped angrily. “She can’t do anything herself and hates seeing other people succeed!”
Quinna adjusted her glasses and said evenly, “Jealousy ruins people.”
Noelle didn’t even bother to look up. Holly’s words were like flies buzzing–annoying, but not worth noticing. Fighting with people like that just wasted energy.
Holly rushed downstairs, anger boiling inside her. Just as she stepped out of the dorm, a gentle voice called
her name.
“Holly?”
She looked up and saw Viola standing under a nearby tree, smiling and waving.. Viola wore a delicate dress that stood out sharply among the casually dressed students. Holly recognized Viola as a finance major. People said her family was extremely rich.

“Do you need something?” Holly asked, feeling inferior in front of Viola.

Viola walked closer, her expression perfectly gentle and sympathetic. “I think I heard an argument coming from your dorm earlier. Are you okay? Did Noelle … do something again?
“I know Noelle, too. We’ve run into each other before. She’s difficult to get along with. Being stuck in the same dorm with her must be hard on you.”
She stopped mid–sentence, successfully drawing Holly in.
Holly looked at Viola like she’d finally met someone who understood. “You get it, right? She’s always putting on airs! Pretending to be modest while taking all the benefits! It’s just a freshman speech–look how proud she is!”
Viola sighed in agreement. “Exactly. She’s always been like that. Just because she has a few achievements, she looks down on everyone else. And she’s sneaky, too. Otherwise, how would someone like Mr. Menzie stay close to her? I even heard you got punished during the military drill because of her. I really feel bad for you. Do you want her to humiliate herself in front of all the teachers and students?”
“What do you mean?” Holly snapped her head up.
Soon, the day of the welcome party arrived.
Kingstowne University’s event invited not only teachers and students, but also well–known figures from the business world, including the Guzmans.
Mary had wanted to attend to watch her precious Viola perform, but Viola gently stopped her.
“Mom, you haven’t been feeling well. Don’t tire yourself out. I’ll take lots of photos and videos and send them to you, okay?”
“Mom, I’ll go.” Alina picked up the invitation, her tone firm. “I have things to take care of at the university anyway.”
Mary looked at her eldest daughter’s cool expression, then at her younger daughter’s sweet smile. Her- heart tilted unconsciously once again. She patted Viola’s hand affectionately, “Our Charlotte is so thoughtful, always worrying about me. Alina, you go for me then. Make sure you take plenty of photos and videos of Charlotte’s performance.”
Before letting Alina go, she added, “Take care of your sister. Don’t let me hear that you bullied her again like last time.”
“Got it,” Alina replied flatly.
Viola held onto Mary’s arm, a hint of smug satisfaction flashing in her eyes.
