“Ms. Kain, thank you for saving my father’s life. This debt of gratitude–the Hallers will never forget it.” Ignatius, just past forty, spoke with calm sincerity, his manner refined and courteous.
Renee smiled gently. “Yes, Ms. Kain. If you ever need anything in the future, don’t hesitate to come to us. My father–in–law is especially fond of you.”
Renee had none of the sharp, icy vibe a lot of society women wore like armor. She was quiet and warm, with the kind of softness that made people relax around her. Noelle found herself looking at her twice, instinctively feeling a sense of closeness.
So Noelle had actually saved Roman’s life?!
Belinda and Derek were hit by the revelation like a blow to the head, completely stunned.
But before they could even process it, an even more shocking statement followed.
Roman spoke again, his voice slow and steady. “Noelle, about what happened at the Guzman Residence yesterday–you made that trip for nothing. Another day, I’ll personally take you back. Angus owes you an apology.”
He didn’t raise his voice, but it cracked the quiet ballroom like thunder.
The Guzmans?!
He’d personally escort her there?!
And make Angus apologize?!
Any one of those would’ve rattled a room. All three? The crowd was shaken.
The Guzmans.
They sat above the Four Great Families–top of the food chain.
And Noelle was connected to them?
And from the sound of it, the Guzmans had slighted her, so Roman was stepping in, throwing his weight behind her.
Brandon was completely dumbfounded.
Derek’s pupils constricted.
Belinda’s face drained of color, her hands clenched tightly into fists.
She never would’ve imagined that this girl–Noelle–had such an expansive network. And Lucas was close to her. That meant Lucas had gained a terrifyingly powerful ally.
No.
She would never allow that.
The Steele heir position could only belong to her son.

“Ms. Charlotte has arrived-”
Suddenly-
The announcement rang out again.
Noelle had been mid–conversation with Roman. Hearing it, she instinctively turned toward the entrance.
Ms. Charlotte?
Alina’s younger sister?
She wanted to see who it was.
Her gaze shifted to the doors.
At that moment, the heavy banquet doors were pushed open once more by the attendants, and a familiar figure slowly entered her field of vision.
The young woman had clearly dressed with care. She wore a champagne–colored dress, her makeup delicate and flawless. Two bodyguards followed closely behind her as she walked in with her chin lifted, radiating arrogance–the very picture of a pampered heiress.
It was-
Viola.
“How is it her?!”
Even Lucas froze in disbelief.
Viola Kain?!
Since when did she become Ms. Charlotte of the Guzmans?
Sebastian frowned as well.
Noelle remained outwardly calm, watching her coolly, though a flicker of doubt and suspicion passed through her eyes.
Because of the angle, Viola hadn’t noticed them yet.
She basked in the attention of the room, her chin held high.
The Steele family banquet hadn’t actually required anyone from the Guzmans to attend.
A gift would’ve sufficed.
But she had insisted–pestered Mary relentlessly until she agreed.
Mary couldn’t refuse her. Thinking it might be good for the girl to show her face and build connections, she allowed it–assigning two bodyguards and reminding her to be careful and not stay long.
Viola soaked in the gazes around her–curious, probing, envious–and felt a swell of satisfaction.

This was exactly what she wanted. She wanted everyone to know that Viola was now the Guzman’s daughter–their treasured darling.
She walked gracefully up to Brandon and Belinda, wearing a sweet yet restrained smile. “Mr. Brandon, Mrs. Steele, happy birthday. My mother isn’t feeling well, so she sent me to offer her wishes. A small gift–please accept it.”
She gestured to the bodyguards to present the gift, her posture elegant, her tone composed–every inch the noble young lady.
Both Brandon and Belinda were taken aback.
The Guzmans had truly sent someone–and not just anyone, but this newly acknowledged second daughter, clearly favored by Mary.
“Ms. Charlotte, you’re far too kind! Mrs. Mary’s health comes first–and yet she still remembered me… Please, have a seat.”
Brandon hurried to usher her in.
Belinda smiled brightly as she stepped forward. “Ms. Charlotte, please, come sit here.”
She clasped Viola’s hand warmly, as though they were already close.
Soft murmurs rippled through the crowd.
“So, this is the newly recognized daughter of the Guzmans? She is quite pretty.”
“I’ve heard Mrs. Mary dotes on her like the apple of her eye. Looks like it’s true.”
“Tsk, tsk. That aura–yeah, she’s different now.”
Hearing all this, Viola grew even more pleased. The humiliation she’d suffered at the Genesis Group orientation suddenly felt repaid in full.
“Mrs. Steele, you’re quite different from how I’d imagined–based on what I’d heard Lucas say.”
Belinda froze. The moment Lucas’s name was mentioned, her head practically exploded.
Charlotte knew Lucas, too?!
Brandon turned sharply. “Ms. Charlotte, are you acquainted with Lucas?”
Viola knew Lucas had been driven out of the Steele family, that his relationship with his father was strained, and assumed he wouldn’t attend the birthday banquet.
Thinking he wasn’t present anyway, she decided to smear him without restraint.
“I do know him. I lived in Riverdale for a while before,” she sighed softly, her tone tinged with regret. “Lucas… well. He’s rather outrageous. Indulging in nightlife is one thing, but he often speaks without restraint, saying things disrespectful toward Mr. Brandon and Mrs. Steele. Even I felt bad for you.”
