Her words were carefully vague–never stating anything outright, yet leaving just enough room for imagination to run wild. In a few light strokes, she painted Lucas as an unfilial, reckless son who badmouthed his parents behind their backs.
Brandon’s expression darkened instantly. His chest rose and fell, fury written all over his face.
Belinda, on the other hand, couldn’t hide the flicker of satisfaction in her eyes, even as she put on a sorrowful front. “This child…. he’s really gone too far. Ruining his own reputation is one thing, but how could he speak about his parents like that…”
Around them, the guests began whispering among themselves, their gazes instinctively shifting toward the back of the hall- toward Lucas.
Viola was inwardly pleased, completely unaware that Lucas was actually present.
She was just about to add a few more cutting remarks, determined to grind Lucas into the dirt for good.
Suddenly, a lazy, drawling voice laced with unmistakable mockery drifted out from behind her.
“Well, now. I was wondering who was so busy trash–talking
me behind
my
back. Turns out it’s Ms. Charlotte.”
That voice-
Viola stiffened, then spun around.

Beside him, Sebastian stood cold and sharp–eyed, while Noelle watched quietly, a faint trace of ridicule in her gaze.
They were all here?!
And they had heard everything she’d just said?!
The color drained from Viola’s face in an instant. Panic surged up her spine.
She never imagined Lucas would show up tonight-
Or that he’d arrive with Sebastian and Noelle.
And worse–had Noelle heard the servants call her “Ms. Charlotte” earlier?
Did she suspect anything?
“L–Lucas… W–why are you here?” Her voice trembled as she forced herself to stay composed.
“That’s a strange question,” Lucas snorted, strolling toward her at an unhurried pace. “I came home to celebrate my father’s birthday. Do I need to report that to you, Ms. Charlotte?” He emphasized the title deliberately, dripping with sarcasm.
“More importantly,” he stopped in front of her, leaning in slightly, his hunter eyes flashing coldly, “standing at my dad’s birthday banquet, in front of this many guests, spreading rumors about me–Ms. Charlotte, is that the Guzmans‘ idea of manners? Or do you

“1–I didn’t…”
Viola instinctively stumbled back, bumping into one of her bodyguards. She grabbed his arm to steady herself. Her eyes reddened instantly, her voice choking with tears. “Lucas, how could you talk to me like that? I was only… only repeating what I heard. I was thinking of Mr. Brandon and Mrs. Steele…”
“Thinking of them?”
Lucas laughed as if he’d just heard the joke of the year. Straightening, he swept his gaze across the room and raised his voice. “Everyone here should know–this so–called Ms. Charlotte? Back when she was in Riverdale, she was anything but innocent. As for the things she just said–how much of it was true, she knows better than anyone. Or would you like me to remind you how, on the day of the SAT, you were dragged into a police station like a stray-”
“Shut up!”
Viola screamed, cutting him off. Her chest heaved violently, terror flashing through her eyes. Those things could never be exposed in Kingstowne–if they were, she’d be finished.
“So, you’re afraid of people talking about what you did? Too bad. I don’t feel like shutting up.” Lucas’s smile turned wicked.
Viola began to tremble, genuinely afraid he would reveal her past in Riverdale.
The onlookers exchanged uneasy glances. Something was clearly wrong.
Was it just their imagination–or did Viola actually look afraid of Lucas?
Roman noticed it too. He had been seated behind Lucas earlier. Slowly, he rose and asked, “Lucas, do you know Ms. Charlotte?”
Because Roman had been sitting down before, Viola hadn’t noticed him at all.
Now, seeing him stand, her vision nearly went black. She almost fainted on the spot.
