Seeing the sheer terror and helplessness on her adopted daughter’s face, Mary’s heart twisted painfully. Her hatred for Noelle deepened into something visceral. “It’s okay, I believe you. I’ll make her withdraw the charges. Right now.”
She turned to Alina. “Alina, you know that Noelle girl, don’t you? Call her. Tell her to come here immediately and withdraw the lawsuit. Make it clear she can name her price. Otherwise, she’ll learn what it means to cross the Guzmans.”
Alina frowned. Faced with her mother’s fury, she hesitated only briefly before pulling out her phone and dialing Noelle’s number.
It rang and rang, but no one answered.
She tried again. This time, it went straight to voicemail.
“Fine. Just great. She wants to do this the hard way,” Mary spat, her chest heaving with fury. A ruthless glint flashed in her eyes. “Who does she think she is? Some upstart with a bit of talent who’s managed to snag Sebastian? She seriously thinks the Guzmans can’t touch her? Charlotte is my daughter, finally back where she belongs! I won’t allow anyone to lay a finger on her!”
She turned to her assistant without hesitation. “Get me everything on the Steeles, especially Lucas Steele. They’re close to Noelle. ! want their business squeezed. Apply pressure everywhere. We’ll keep tightening the vise until Noelle crawls out of whatever hole she’s hiding in. The pressure stops only when she agrees to drop the charges.”
The Guzmans made their move.
And they moved fast.
Within days, Steele Group was hit hard.
Multiple projects were abruptly terminated midstream, and partnerships that had already been negotiated were suddenly put on indefinite hold.
The Guzmans were one of Kingstowne’s most powerful old–money families. Angus Guzman was widely respected. He’d helped countless smaller families rise over the years. No one wanted to cross them. When the Guzmans applied pressure, doors closed without a second thought.
“It must be because of Lucas. He offended Ms. Charlotte last time. The Guzmans wouldn’t strike out like this without cause.” Belinda said softly, watching Brandon’s mounting rage. She framed her words as placation, but carefully steered the blame.
“That bastard!”
Brandon roared, clutching his chest as a coughing fit overtook him.
“Derek, quick, get your father some water.”
Derek swiftly poured a glass of water and handed it to his father, his voice soothing. “Dad, don’t be so hard on Lucas. He’s just impulsive like that. I’ll help you shoulder the company’s burdens.”
Brandon looked at his attentive, gentle younger son, then thought of his defiant, rebellious eldest. The contrast made his blood boil hotter.
“Call that bastard! Tell him to get his sorry self home right now!”
The butler hurried off to make the call. When he returned, his hands were trembling as he passed the phone back. “Sir, I told Mr.

Lucas about the company’s situation. I also told him you were furious. But h–he said…”
“Said what?!” Brandon bellowed.

“He asked if you were still alive,” the butler said weakly. “And if you really dropped dead from anger… He’d come back for the funeral.”
“That ungrateful bastard!”
Cyrus saw red.
A gush of crimson blood erupted from Brandon’s mouth, splattering across his desk.
Meanwhile, Lucas ended the call. His expression remained unchanged.
Of course he knew why the Guzmans were going after Noelle. It all came down to Viola’s mess, yet again.
Viola had tried time and time again to hurt Noelle, and now she wanted to use the Guzmans‘ influence to force Noelle into submission. Dream on.
His loyalty was firmly with Noelle.
When Noelle learned what Mary had done to the Steeles, her eyes turned to ice.
Mrs. Guzman would stop at nothing for her impostor daughter.
“They’re going to such lengths for Viola,” Noelle murmured, her voice deceptively calm. “Tell them not to worry. I’ll go see her now.”
“I’ll go with you,” Sebastian said gently.
“Noey, I’m coming too,” Lucas said, springing to his feet. “No one’s laying a finger on you while I’m around.”
Noelle looked at them both, a wry smile touching her lips. She walked to the mirror and picked up a plain black face mask, pulling
it over the lower half of her face. It hid her features, leaving only her tranquil, chillingly cold eyes visible.
“It’s crooked.”
Sebastian murmured, reaching over and adjusted the mask with a careful touch.
Lucas stared at them, baffled. “Wait. Why the sudden disguise?”
He thought about it for a second, then shrugged. “Actually, yeah. A police station’s not exactly the cleanest place. Probably smart.”
At the police station, in a private visitation room.
