“You even tricked her into going by pretending you’d twisted your ankle. Forget her, I’d be furious too. Anyone would be angry if their sincerity was used like that!”

“I did it for her own good!” Mary snapped. “Sebastian was kicked out by the Menzies! What kind of future could she have following someone like that?”

Angus knew there was no reasoning with her. He shook his head and fell silent. In the end, it was his fault for spoiling this daughter too much. As his gaze swept over her, he suddenly noticed the scrape on her arm. “What happened to your arm?”

Only then did Mary realize that the bandage Viola had put on was still visible.

She quickly covered her arm. “It’s nothing. I scraped it by accident. Dad, it’s late. You should get some rest.”

With that, she hurried upstairs, as if she were fleeing.

Angus watched her retreating figure, his frown deepening.

He set the newspaper aside and said to the butler standing in the shadows, “Go check where Mrs. Guzman went tonight and who she met.”

“Yes, sir.”

The night was far from over.

Inside Ethan’s room, the four guards who were watching him were sprawled across the floor. Some were clutching their stomachs and groaning; others were completely unconscious.

A faint smell of blood lingered in the air.

Ethan leaned against the wall, breathing a little hard.

His white shirt was stained with blood and dust. His lip was split, and a bruise spread across his cheekbone. Yet his cold eyes were blazing, sharp as ice.

He swept his gaze over the guards who could no longer move.

These men were all Royce’s enforcers. Taking them down had cost him real effort, and he’d taken several hits in the process. There was no time to lose. Theodore was still suffering from the poison. His life hung in the balance. Ethan had to get out now. He moved quickly to the window. It was the second floor, not too high. He tore off the bedsheets, ripped them into strips, and twisted them into a rope, tied one end to the heavy solid–wood bed frame, and tossed the other end out the window.

His movements were clean and decisive, without hesitation.

Gripping the cloth rope, he swung out the window. His arm muscles tightened as he controlled his descent, landing soundlessly on the soft grass below.

Ethan scanned his surroundings, alert. The garden was silent. Holding his breath, he moved swiftly toward the wall at the side of the villa. As long as he got over that wall, there would be an alley leading to the main road outside.

A few black sedans appeared from nowhere, their headlights flaring together like searchlights, flooding the small area around Ethan with harsh light.

Ethan stopped short. Straight ahead, Royce stepped out from the front car, surrounded by bodyguards in black.

“My dear nephew,” Royce said as he strolled forward. “Where do you think you’re going?”

His gaze was sharp. “Did you really think I only left those useless men in your room to watch you? Did you think I wouldn’t account for your abilities or guard against you trying to escape?”

Ethan lowered his hands and looked at him without expression. He didn’t speak. He only clenched his fists, his knuckles whitening

“So stubborn,” Royce said, shaking his head as his tone turned cold. “If you won’t stay put where I arranged for you to rest, then we’ll move you somewhere even safer.”

He waved a hand. Dozens of bodyguards closed in from all sides, electric batons in their hands, their expressions vicious. Every possible escape route was sealed.

This time, there were far more of them than before, and they were clearly prepared.

Ethan wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and stared coldly at the unhurried Royce. His voice was hoarse but steady. “You think this will stop me?”

Royce’s calm smile deepened. “Ethan, of course I know you’re capable. These men might not be able to stop you.”

His tone shifted, his eyes turning dark. “But you should think about Theodore. Right now, Theodore is lying upstairs. That ventilator breathing for him… it’s such a heartbreaking sound.”

He paused deliberately, watching Ethan’s face tighten, before continuing slowly. “Tell me, if a doctor were to make a small mistake, or if I had someone add a little something extra, do you think he’d pass peacefully right away?”

“You wouldn’t dare!”

Ethan’s eyes went red. He surged forward a step, only to be blocked firmly by the guards.
