After sending the message, Noelle pressed her phone against her chest and let out a quiet breath.

It didn’t matter who that person was. It didn’t matter what kind of background Jasper’s benefactor had. Anyone who dared to touch Sebastian would face the consequences.

The bathroom door opened. Sebastian stepped out, warm steam still clinging to him. His hair was half–dry, and he wore a dark gray robe.

He walked over, bent down, and gently lifted Noelle from the couch.

“I said I’d help you wash up.”

Noelle didn’t resist. She buried her face against his neck.

He carried her into the bedroom. His large, rough but warm hands brushed lightly across her smooth skin, sending a small shiver through her.

The worries she hadn’t spoken out loud and the plans forming quietly in her mind, she set them aside for now.

At least for this moment, she just wanted to stay close to him.

She would protect Sebastian. No matter what.

As for everyone else, she would deal with anyone who targeted him.

“What’s wrong?” Lucas changed into house slippers and spoke lazily. “Who upset you?”

Jaylee looked up at him. Her eyes were already slightly red. “You.”

Lucas clicked his tongue. He unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt and leaned back on the couch. “I told you already. My buddy ran into a life and death situation. It was serious. I had to check on him.”

“Your buddy again! Your mind is always on your buddies!” Jaylee’s voice rose, full of complaint. “Are they more important than me? You promised, and you didn’t show up! My friends were all waiting there. What was I supposed to say to them?”

She hadn’t replied to any messages in the group chat. She was totally embarrassed.

She didn’t truly like Lucas, but she did enjoy the luxurious life he gave her.

Lucas frowned slightly. His tone turned colder. “Sebastian and Noey matter more than you. They’re like family to me. You don’t know them. Tomorrow I’ll go with you and apologize to your friends. Okay?”

“Don’t bother!” Jaylee suddenly stood up, anger flashing across her face. “I know my place! I’m just your little toy. You call me when you want me and throw me away when you don’t! Since that’s the case, I’ll just move out!”

She rushed into the bedroom, pulled out a suitcase, and started stuffing clothes from the closet into it. Her movements were loud and dramatic.

Lucas leaned against the doorframe. He didn’t stop her. He didn’t say anything.

Jaylee bit her lip. Her movements slowed.

She waited three seconds. Nothing happened. So she stuffed the last few pieces of clothing into the suitcase, zipped it up, and dragged it back into the living room.

Jaylee walked up to Lucas. Her chin was raised, and her back was straight, as if she would rather break than bend.

“I’m not someone without pride,” she said firmly. Every word sounded like it had been practiced. “The money I spent these past months–I’ll pay it back. I may be poor, but I still have my dignity.”

Jaylee’s eyes lit up. The excitement was impossible to hide.

She took a deep breath and forced the smile on her lips down, turning it into a faint curve like she was granting him a favor.

“Well…” she said after a pause, trying to sound casual, “then tomorrow you should introduce

me to your

friends.”

Jaylee had wanted to meet Lucas’s social circle for a long time.

She heard Lucas’s best friend was from the Menzies. He had married the newly found daughter of the Guzmans. Those people were the true elite.
