It was alright. She still had Lucas,
Just thinking about him helped steady her nerves.

“Jaylee, let’s try that new Jesundian place for lunch, alright?” Her friend hooked an arm through hers, voice sweet with a hint of flattery. “I heard it’s impossible to get a table.”
“I’ll pass.” Jaylee shook her head, keeping her tone polite. She glanced at her watch, trying not to seem rushed. “I have another lunch later.”
“A lunch? With whom?”
Jaylee paused. Her tone sounded casual, but pride flickered in her eyes. “It’s with the Guzmans‘ eldest daughter. The one everyone keeps talking about. She asked me to lunch.”
“Oh my god! The Guzmans‘ long–lost daughter?”
“Jaylee, you’re amazing. Even the Guzmans‘ daughter wants to meet you!”
“She’s the top debutante in Kingstowne! Can you get her autograph for us?”
Jaylee smiled, but doubt crept in.
She didn’t actually know the Guzmans‘ daughter. She had only seen her in Lucas’s story earlier.
She remembered that Lucas arranged a lunch today with Sebastian and his wife. The Guzmans‘ daughter had to be the “Noey” Lucas mentioned.
She was determined to use this chance to get into that circle.
Jaylee’s fingers tightened around her purse.
She would get into that world, no matter what.
Lucas had already arrived at the restaurant.
He slouched in his chair, tapping his phone with long fingers. The blue light from the screen flickered across his face, hiding his expression.
Brandon had just posted a new story. Nine pictures, captioned, “Family day out with the wife and kid. Life’s peaceful.”
In the photos, Brandon had one arm around Belinda. Belinda smiled, calm and elegant. Derek stood beside them, arms full of shopping bags.
They looked like a perfect family. The kind that made your chest hurt.
Lucas stared at the photos for a few seconds. A small smile threatened to break out.
He flipped his phone face down on the table, blocking out the harsh light.
Then he closed his eyes and let himself relax.

His head tipped back, Adam’s apple shifting, the overhead lights making his eyelids sting. He stayed like that, not bothering to
move.
Suddenly, his phone rang, sharp and loud.
He let it ring for a few seconds, then picked it up.
Jaylee’s name flashed on the screen.
“Are you almost here?” His voice was flat, showing no emotion.
Jaylee’s voice on the other end was broken and shaky. “Lucas… my mom… her condition got worse all of a sudden… I’m at the hospital now… I’m so scared…”
Lucas’s eyes flew open. He got to his feet and grabbed his coat from the chair. “Stay there. I’m coming right now.”
He walked out and dialed Sebastian as he moved.
Sebastian answered right away. Lucas spoke quickly. “Sebastian, Noey, lunch is canceled. Jaylee’s mom is in the hospital. I have to go.”
“Alright.” Sebastian’s voice stayed calm. “Do you need help?”
“I’ll handle it.” Lucas reached the elevator. “Take Noey to lunch. The restaurant knows you’re coming. Order anything, put it on my
tab.”
Noelle’s voice came through, lazy but lively. “Fine, we’ll put it all on you. I’m not holding back.”
Lucas gave a short laugh and ended the call.
At the hospital, Jaylee was crouched outside the emergency room, hugging her knees.
Her shoulders shook.
She still wore the dress she picked for shopping. Her makeup was perfect except for the eyeliner smeared by tears. She looked small and helpless.
“Jaylee.” Lucas came over, crouched down, and put his hand on her shoulder.
Jaylee looked up at him. The tears came faster. “Lucas… my mom… do you think she’ll…”
“Don’t worry.” Lucas helped her stand. “Where’s the doctor? Are they here?”
The emergency room doors swung open, and a middle–aged man in a lab coat walked out.
