Lucas stayed a little longer. Once Renee’s condition was fully stable, he got a call about something urgent and left the hospital.

The room was quiet with just Jaylee and Renee.

Night had fallen. The hall outside was quiet, broken only by the soft steps of passing nurses.

When Renee woke, she saw Jaylee sitting by her bed. Jaylee’s eyes were red, and dried tear tracks marked her face.

“Jaylee…” Renee’s voice came out weak.

Jaylee straightened up, moving closer. “Mom, you’re awake? How do you feel?”

Renee didn’t answer right away. She just watched her daughter, her expression full of conflict. “I’m just causing trouble for you again with my health.”

Hearing that, Jaylee’s frustration boiled over. “If you know you’re making things harder, then take care of yourself! I keep telling you to rest and eat right. Have you listened? Today’s episode happened so suddenly. Do you know how scared I was? Do you know I was supposed to meet someone really important today?”

Her voice got louder, her eyes growing wet again.

Renee waited until Jaylee finished. She reached out and took her daughter’s hand.

Her hand was thin and bony, but it was warm.

“I know… I’ve been a burden.” Renee’s voice was soft, thick with guilt and love. “Lucas is a good man. You should treat him well. Don’t aim too high. If you lose him, there won’t be another.”

Jaylee’s mouth opened, but no words came.

“All these years… my health’s been poor, and I haven’t saved anything for you…” Renee’s own eyes turned red. “Jaylee, I’m sorry.” Jaylee’s chest tightened. The anger faded, swept away by a rush of emotion.

She turned away, blinking fast to hold back tears. Her voice came out stubborn. “Don’t say that. Just get better. Everything else… I’ll handle.”

She paused, then squeezed Renee’s hand tighter. Her voice dropped, edged with determination. “I’ll get into that circle. I’ll give you a good life. I promise.”

Sebastian looked up.

“They’re hers!” Duo jumped in, his face just as troubled. “They’re the best from the Alliance 749. There are sentries all around. The villa is locked down tight. Sir, I don’t understand… What are we guarding against?”

Sebastian stayed silent.

He remembered the way Noelle’s face changed when she spoke to Jasper a few days ago. She’d been distracted since then, even if she didn’t say anything.

Now, Primo said there were three hundred elite guards from the 749 Alliance stationed outside.
