It wasn’t a collapse. It wasn’t rage or panic. It was something deeper–like a riptide beneath frozen water, silent but fierce, threatening to drag everything under.
“So, all these 20 years,” Sebastian’s voice was barely a whisper, thin as mist, “you’ve been watching me?”
“That’s right.” The man’s lips stretched into a cruel, feral grin. “Since you were a kid. Through every step–growing up, falling in love, getting married. We were always there. When you were happy, we’d find a way to ruin it. When you suffered, we’d laugh in the dark. Entertaining, isn’t it?”
Lucas couldn’t hold back. He lunged and kicked the man, fury snapping in his voice. “You bastard-”
“Lucas.” Noelle’s hand caught his arm, steady and firm.
She stepped to Sebastian’s side and took his hand in hers.
His skin was ice–cold and trembling.
She tightened her grip, letting her warmth flow slowly into him.
Sebastian didn’t look at her, but after a moment, his fingers closed around hers, holding on as if she were a lifeline.
“If you won’t talk,” Noelle said, her voice cool and measured, “then you will be taken in. Use every tool we have. Let’s see how long he holds out.”
Kevin nodded, understanding at once.
Black–clad guards stepped forward and dragged the man away. His laughter echoed down the hall, sharp and venomous, like a
curse.
“Sebastian! You won’t live long! No one around you will! You owe us! Your mother owes us!”
The voice faded.
The living room fell into a frozen hush.
Angus sighed, leaning heavily on his cane as he stood. “Noey, are you alright?”
“I’m fine.” Noelle steadied him with an arm. “Grandpa, are you
hurt?”
“I’m all right. Thanks to Darell and the others.” Angus squeezed her hand, then looked at Sebastian–his gaze heavy with things he didn’t say.
Just then, a clatter of footsteps rushed down the stairs.
Mary burst into the room, hair wild, robe flapping, eyes wide from sleep and panic.
She pointed at Sebastian, her voice sharp enough to slice the air.
“See? Do you see? Didn’t I tell you? Now trouble’s come to the Guzmans! And you still don’t believe me!”
She spun to Noelle, eyes red and wild with worry. “Sebastian is a curse! What happened to the Menzies is their business, but why

drag my family down too? You have to break up with him, right now! This minute!”
Noelle met her eyes, silent.

“Are you deaf?!” Mary lunged to grab her. “Come upstairs! Pack your things! From tonight on, you’re not allowed to see him again!”
Noelle stepped back, out of reach.
Mary froze, thrown off balance.
“Are you done?” Noelle’s voice was cold and quiet.
“You-”
“If you’re done, go back to bed.” Noelle’s tone sliced through the room. “This isn’t your business.”
Mary’s face flushed with rage. “Not my business? I’m your mother! How can I watch you throw yourself into the fire?”
“If it’s a fire, I’ll walk through it myself.” Noelle’s eyes were steady, almost distant, as if looking at a stranger. “Who I love is my decision. It has nothing to do with you.”
“You-!”
“Enough!” Angus slammed his cane against the floor, his voice booming with authority. “It’s the middle of the night. Haven’t we had enough chaos?”
Mary opened her mouth, but the words died. She glanced at Angus, then at Noelle’s frozen expression. At last, she stomped her foot in frustration and stormed upstairs.
A door slammed.
Silence swept the living room.
Angus let out a weary breath and waved Noelle away. “Go on. Do what you need to do. I’ll handle things here.”
Noelle nodded and turned toward the door. Sebastian followed, Lucas and Serena at his heels.
At the threshold, Darell’s voice called out quietly. “Noelle.”
Noelle paused, turning back.
Darell stood in the center of the room, his mismatched eyes fixed on her in the lamplight.
He said nothing at first, but his gaze was full of questions, concern, and something darker she couldn’t decipher.
Noelle glanced at Sebastian.
Sebastian caught her look, nodded, and released her hand. “Go ahead.”
