“That’s a nameless island. You won’t find it on any map. No coordinates, no name. It’s been there for decades, maybe even longer.”
Noelle listened quietly.
“About a hundred years ago, during the war, several powerful families fled together. They ended up at sea and found that island. They settled there. The people on the island rarely leave. They live cut off from the outside world and follow their own rules, their own laws, and their own grudges.”
He paused, his expression turning conflicted.
“Sebastian’s mother is from that island.”
Noelle’s fingers tightened slightly.
“She was adopted by the Pattons,” Jasper continued. “She grew up on the island and was childhood sweethearts with Floyd Patton, their eldest son. Their families had already arranged their marriage. Everyone thought it was a done deal.
“But when she was eighteen, she slipped off the island,” he said softly. “Out there, she met Sebastian’s father.
“She fell in love with him. Completely. She broke off the engagement, stayed in the outside world, and married him.”
The story sounded almost unreal, like something out of a novel. Noelle looked at him. “So the people chasing them were that fiancé?”
If someone wiped out a whole family over love, that kind of person would be terrifying.
Jasper shook his head. “I don’t know exactly who it was. The Pattons keep their affairs private. Outsiders don’t get details like that. But most likely, they’re involved.”
He paused, then looked at Noelle with firm resolve.
“I know I can’t stop you,” Jasper said. “But you have to take me with you.”
“I’ve been near that island before,” he added, staring at her. “Not that exact one, but another island nearby. I know the waters around there–the reefs, the tides. Taking me with you will only help.”

Noelle stayed expressionless. “We don’t know what’s out there. We might die. You still want to go?”
“If I die, wouldn’t that make you happy?” Jasper said gently. “Besides, I owe you. Viola is my sister. What she did, I can’t pretend I had nothing to do with it. You saved my life. I need to repay that.
“And not just to repay you.” He lowered his head, his voice rough. “I just… want to do something for you. I’ve been a terrible brother. At least this time, let me stand on your side.”
Noelle didn’t look at him. She didn’t react to his words. “You can come if you want,” she said flatly. “But let’s be clear–if something goes wrong, I’m not saving you.”
Her words were blunt.
Jasper’s eyes dimmed for a moment, then he smiled again. “I understand.”
Noelle called Lucas and Serena over and repeated everything Jasper had told her. The moment they heard she was going to find Sebastian, both of them reacted at once. “I’m going! I have to!” Lucas slapped his thigh. “Sebastian’s my brother. There’s no way sitting this out. Noey, you have to take me. If you don’t, we’re going to have a problem!”
Serena stepped forward too. “Noelle, I’m coming. Don’t leave me out.”
Noelle shook her head.
I’m
“We don’t know what’s on that island. We can’t all go in together,” she said, looking at Serena. “You stay behind. We’ll need support on the outside.”
Serena’s face dropped instantly. “Why?! Why does this fool get to go, but I don’t?!”
Lucas frowned. “Fool? Who are you calling a fool?”
“You! Who else?” Serena pointed at him, nearly poking his nose. “Look at you. All talk, no skill. How am I supposed to trust you to go with Noelle?”
Lucas laughed, annoyed. “Who said I’m all talk? I can fight too, okay? I’m not worse than you, Ms. Wynn!”

“Not worse? You’re
way worse!”
“Have you even fought me to say that?”
“I don’t need to! I just know!”
“Then let’s fight right now!”
