She walked into the advisor’s office and placed the application form on the desk.

The advisor glanced at it and froze.

“A leave of absence?” He looked up at her. “Noelle, finals are coming up. You’ve been ranked first in your class this whole time. Why take a break now?”

Noelle spoke calmly. “You know how I am. Once I decide something, no one can change it. I have something important to deal with. I have to leave.”

The advisor opened his mouth, as if he wanted to argue. In the end, he just sighed.

“All right. I’ll sign it. But I can’t approve it myself. It has to be reported.”

He signed the form, then made a phone call.

Soon, a wave of footsteps echoed from the hallway. Loud. Fast. Getting closer.

Noelle looked toward the door.

A huge crowd was rushing toward her.

“Is someone bullying you?” Aaron pushed forward, furious. “Tell me who! I still have some connections in education. I can help!”

“Yeah, yeah!” another professor added. “Noelle, you’re our school’s pride! Top SAT scorer, young medical genius–if anyone messes with you, we won’t let it go!”

“I heard you’re looking for someone?” another professor said. “Who is it? No matter where they are, we’ll help you find them!”

Voices came from all directions. Loud, overlapping, nonstop–like a swarm of bees.

“Stop,” Noelle said.

The crowd fell silent.

“It’s personal,” she said, a little helpless. “I’ll come back when I’m done.”

Chris paused. Then his eyes actually turned red.

“You have to come back!” he said, gripping her hand and shaking it hard. “You’re the pride of Kingstowne University! If you don’t come back, I–I’ll go wait outside your house!”

Noelle had no words.

“Yeah!” the deans echoed.

“We’ll wait!” the professors said together.

“We’ll wait!” Her classmates shouted in unison.

Their voices filled the hallway, loud enough to shake the ceiling.

Eleanor rushed over and hugged Noelle tight, so tight she could barely breathe.

“Noelle! You have to come back!” Her voice shook, thick with tears. “If you don’t, I’ll–I’ll message you every day! Texts, voice notes, videos–hundreds of them! I’ll annoy you to death!”

Quinna squeezed in from the side and hugged her too, tears finally falling.

“Yeah. We’ll keep calling and texting until you can’t stand it. You’re not getting rid of us.”

The rest of the class spoke up together.
