The young man in blue looked around but didn’t see anyone. After glancing at the two bodyguards behind Shirley, he wisely backed away.
Lucas stood in the open plaza, looked at Shirley, then down at the hard stone beneath his feet, his mouth twitching “Why does she get a chair while we have to sit on the ground?”
“She’s from the Duncans.”
As Jasper spoke, he glanced at the ground, removed his coat, and laid it beneath Noelle for her to sit on. “Noey, this’ll keep you warm. It’ll be more comfortable.”
‘Hey! Nice move! Who told you to beat me to it?”
Lucas had been taking off his own jacket too, but Jasper moved first. He immediately spread his floral shirt underneath Noelle as well.
‘One more layer. Sit, Noey. It’s nice and soft now.”
Noelle looked at them in amusement but didn’t say much before sitting down.
Shirley happened to witness the whole scene and frowned unhappily.
That woman looks completely average.
Why are those two men treating her like a queen?
And both of them are even better-looking than my own bodyguards.
Jealousy and irritation flashed through Shirley’s eyes.
The group rested there for a while before movement finally stirred below the mountain.
First came a few exhausted people climbing up the final steps, faces pale, lips purple, legs shaking violently. The second thes reached the top, they collapsed onto the ground, gasping for air.
Then more and more people dragged themselves up. Some clung to the railings, some supported each other, and some practically rolled their way to the summit.
One fat guy lay facedown on the ground so long without moving that people nearby thought he’d passed out lust as someone was about to call for help, he suddenly rolled over onto his back and weakly muttered, “I I’m still alive
Lucas nearly burst out laughing and whispered to Jasper, “Good thing we skipped the climb”
Jasper ignored him.
Two hours later, the sound of a bell echoed up from the foot of the mountain, deep and distant as it reverberated through the valleys several times.
A middle-aged man in gray robes stood atop the stairs and announced expressionlessly. “Time is up Anyone who failed to reach
the summit is eliminated.”

The man in gray continued, “Second trial begins now. Medicine Department, Guard Department, Records Department Fach division will recruit its own candidates. Those who pass will officially join the Nightfall Circle.”
The crowd stirred and began moving toward the different departments.
Lucas stood up and brushed dirt off himself before looking at Noelle. “Noey, you head to the Medicine Department first Jasper and I are going to the Guard Department. We’ll come find you after we finish.”
Noelle nodded. “Alright. Be careful.”
‘Relax. There’s no way anything’s happening to me.” Lucas slapped his chest proudly, his floral shirt swaying dramatically. “Once get into the Guard Department, I’ll be the one protecting you in fights.”
Jasper glanced at him expressionlessly. “Pass first. Then talk.”
Lucas glared at him. “You think I won’t pass? Me? Just watch.”
The two headed toward the Guard Department.
Noelle turned and walked toward the Medicine Department.
The Medicine Department’s testing area was set up beneath a massive pine tree. Several long tables displayed dozens of medicinai herbs. Some were fresh, some dried out, some sliced, and others ground into powder.
Beside them sat medicine mortars, pestles, and piles of bottles and jars.
The examiner was a middle-aged man in his forties with short facial hair and a gray-blue robe. His expression was stern, and his eyes looked painfully critical.
Seven or eight people lined up before him, men and women, both young and old.
Shirley stood at the very front while her two bodyguards waited farther away.
She’d changed into a pale green outfit better suited for movement, though the gold hairpins in her hair and emerald bracket in her wrist still screamed wealth and status.
“Ms. Duncan, please go ahead.” The examiner smiled warmly at her, sounding far too polite for someone speaking to a test candidate.
Shirley stepped forward gracefully and picked up a dried herb After one glance, she answered casually, “Astragales fool Hoosts energy, strengthens the body, promotes fluid regulation, and reduces swelling”
She picked up another one “Moonveil root. Nourishes blood circulation, regulates menstruation, and relieves pain
Then another. “Silverroot. Strengthens the spleen, replenishes energy, clears heat toxins, and balances medicinal properties
