The atmosphere instantly turned tense.
Lucas's eyes widened as he pointed at the man's nose in shock and fury. "Holy shit! What the hell did you do to her?"
Noelle finally snapped back to her senses. Seeing Lucas safe and unharmed made her relax slightly, but hearing his words filled her with an inexplicable sense of shame and embarrassment. She'd actually been kissed by a strange man.
"Uh... it's fine..."
"Fine?" Lucas stared at her swollen lips, his anger flaring even harder. "You call this fine?"
Without another word, Lucas swung his fist straight at the man. "I'll kill you for kissing her!"
But the man simply stood there coldly without even lifting his eyelids.
Just as Lucas's fist was about to hit the man's collar, the man merely glanced at him indifferently.
Just one glance, and Lucas felt like he'd been struck by lightning. His fist froze stiffly in midair as a fear rising from the depths of his soul instantly swallowed him whole.
What kind of look was that?
It was cold, indifferent, and filled with the contempt of someone standing at the top looking down on an insect, carrying a suffocating pressure terrifying enough to crush a person alive.
Lucas felt like he'd been targeted by some ancient beast. His blood seemed to freeze solid, leaving him unable to move.
"You..." Lucas stammered as cold sweat instantly soaked through his back.
This pressure... why does it feel so familiar?
Damn it... Why the hell does it feel exactly like Sebastian?
Right then, Noelle suddenly realized something was wrong after looking around.
"Why are you here alone?" Noelle asked anxiously. "Where's my brother? Where's Jasper?"
Hearing Noelle's question felt like a pardon from death to Lucas. He hurriedly withdrew his fist, wiped the cold sweat off his forehead, and shot the man a terrified look before turning back to Noelle with a miserable expression.
"Jasper... Jasper got taken!"
"Taken?" Noelle's expression instantly changed.
Lucas pointed toward the pitch-black ocean nearby and spoke rapidly, "While we were swimming after jumping in, a few speedboats suddenly showed up. The people on them had guns, and they opened fire on us without a word! They weren't trying to kill us. They wanted to capture us alive!"
He took a deep breath, lingering fear flashing through his eyes. "Jasper... he shoved me away and drew them off himself so I could escape first. If he hadn't held them back, I..."
Lucas's voice lowered. For once, the usually carefree man actually looked serious.
Even though the two of them argued nonstop and couldn't stand each other most days, when it came down to life or death, Jasper had chosen without hesitation to give Lucas the chance to survive.
"Yeah! We're going back! I'm not the kind of guy who abandons his people!"
As Lucas spoke, he glanced sideways at the mysterious man beside him. The guy was terrifying, but since he'd managed to save them from the sea, maybe he had a way to save Jasper too.
The night on the nameless island felt darker than anywhere else.
The man brought them to a secluded but relatively clean wooden house and pushed the door open. The inside was simple, but there were enough blankets and basic furniture.
"You'll stay here tonight."
His voice remained flat, sounding more like an order than a suggestion. "Don't wander around. The island isn't safe."
"What about you?" Noelle asked.
The man turned around, his gaze lingering on her for a moment. His eyes were deep and unreadable.
"I'm going to find Jasper."
After saying that, he turned to leave.
Lucas had been busy looking around the rundown shack, but the second he turned back, he caught the exact moment the man was staring at Noelle.
Every hair on his body instantly stood up like an enraged cat getting its tail stepped on. He jumped in front of Noelle in one step and pointed at the man while shouting, "What the hell are you staring at? You got a problem?"
