Chapter 64 A Very Expensive Lesson

A hundred million dollars. Tarquin simply did not have that kind of cash on hand, but this was The Hallers Auction House. If you called a bid and failed to pay, you would be blacklisted. Once that happened, you could forget about surviving in Kingstowne.

With no choice, Tarquin clenched his teeth and called his father, Royce Hernandez. The moment Royce heard the amount, he nearly exploded.

“Have you lost your mind? 100 million?!”

Tarquin forced himself to explain what had happened at the auction. Royce was furious. “You’d be better off losing your mind! You idiot! Who told you to fight Lucas like that?!”

Royce was shaking with rage, but there was no way out. He transferred the money anyway. That one transfer drained nearly 80% of the family’s liquid funds. From that day on, the family would have to tighten their belts.

“Take the Soulstone and move your ass back home now!” Royce roared. “How did I end up with a son who burns money like this?!”

His voice was so loud that everyone in Tarquin’s private room heard it. Tarquin’s friends exchanged awkward looks. Even the attendant delivering the Soulstone glanced at Tarquin twice.

Tarquin’s face burned red. He quickly ended the call, painfully transferred the money, and stormed out.

“Oh, come on, Mr. Hernandez, why so angry?” one of his companions said. “Think about it. You spent 100 million, sure–but you also made life hard for Lucas.

“He didn’t get the Soulstone. I bet he’s furious right now. There’s only one Soulstone, and you have it. He might even come begging you to sell it at a higher price.”

Hearing that, Tarquin felt better at once.

The money he burnt hurtly, yes. But if it annoyed Lucas, then it was worth it.

There was only one Soulstone. If Lucas wanted it, he would have to come to him.

“Heh. I’ll wait for him to come begging,” Tarquin sneered. “And when he does, 100 million won’t be enough-”

His words stopped mid–sentence.

Tarquin let out a muffled grunt and crashed to the ground.

Duo stood there with a wooden baton on his shoulder, grinning. He tilted his chin proudly at Primo.

Primo smiled back.

Duo dropped the baton into Primo’s arms, bent down, and took the soulstone from Tarquin’s hand. He even gave Tarquin a light kick for good measure.

“Hmph. You want the Soulstone?” Duo said coldly. “First see if you’re strong enough to keep it.”

“Let’s go.”

Back at the auction house, Primo and Duo walked in and handed the Soulstone to Sebastian.

“Mr. Menzie, the Soulstone is here.”

“Show me.”

Lucas took the Soulstone. A sharp, satisfied smile curled at the corner of his lips. He had planned to buy it fair and square. But since Tarquin insisted on playing games, this outcome was on him.

Lucas placed the Soulstone flat on his palm. The moment it touched his skin, a warm feeling spread through his body.

A real treasure.

Noelle smiled as well. When Lucas stopped bidding earlier, she had already guessed his plan. If he couldn’t buy it, he would simply take it.

Tarquin had spent 100 million dollars, and the item was stolen away. She could imagine the priceless look on his face.

Sure enough, moments later, Tarquin’s scream echoed from downstairs.

He stormed into the hall, furious, with a huge bump on his forehead. “I paid a fortune for that Soulstone! I barely stepped outside your auction house, and it was stolen! You have to take responsibility!”

The staff asked where it was lost. Tarquin quickly said, “About 300 feet from the auction house, in an alley.” The staff exchanged a helpless look, then replied politely, “Sir, we’re truly sorry, but that location is already outside the auction house’s responsibility zone. If the item was lost beyond that area, we cannot be held responsible.”

Tarquin exploded in anger and started causing a scene in the lobby. The staff didn’t argue. They simply had securities drag him straight out.

The auction continued.

The auctioneer cleared his throat and announced, “Next up for auction–Wanderroot.”

The moment the word Wanderroot was spoken, Noelle sat up straight.

“Interested?” Sebastian noticed her reaction at once.

Lucas also looked at her. “Wanderroot is a medicinal herb, but it’s extremely violent. It rarely works well with other herbs. On its own, it’s highly toxic. Even a single leaf can be deadly. Noelle, you really want this?”

Noelle stared at the tray in the attendant’s hands. The red cloth was lifted, revealing the herb inside a clear case. Its shape was strange, almost beautiful in a dangerous way.
