Aaliyah, heartbroken for her son, rushed over right away. She concocted an excuse to shoo away my assistant. In a bid to stand up for Nathan, she outright encouraged him to vandalize Natalie’s car. Having carefully checked the area, she reckoned there were no security cameras in the garage. Aaliyah figured that since it was a five-year-old’s doing, Natalie couldn’t really hold it against him, especially with me around.
The moment she got wind that Natalie had called the cops, she was in a complete tizzy.
For the very first time, I was filled with a deep-seated disappointment and annoyance towards Aaliyah. She used to be that refined and sensible Omega. How on earth did she turn out to be so daft and short-sighted? Natalie hit the nail on the head. I wasn’t a good dad. I hadn’t given Nathan a mother who could set a smart example. That was when the urge to break the mate bond with Aaliyah first popped into head.
my
It was getting late. Anna had already left. In the hospital room, only Grace was sitting by Louisa’s side. My dad also phoned, putting on the pressure. His take was that the simplest fix was to end the adoption of Nathan and send him back to the orphanage.
Grace had calmed down a bit. Thinking about Natalie’s car getting scratched, she couldn’t help but feel a bit smug. “Well, who would’ve thought you were such a firecracker, kid? What did Natalie do to make you go after her car?”
But Grace’s flippant remarks got her a scathing look from Louisa. Louisa had nearly keeled over when she saw the video.
“Spit out an apology right this instant!” I ordered Nathan in a gruff voice. I’d been harping on it to Nathan all the way here.
Nathan was so scared he shook like a leaf. He quickly bowed and stuttered out the apology I’d rehearsed with him, “I won’t pull this stunt again… I’ll be good and listen to Daddy, Grandma, and Great-Grandma… I’ll never act up and throw fits again… Cross my heart!”
“The one you owe an apology to is Natalie. I’ve only been gone a little while, and look at this family. What a mess!” Louisa said, her voice shaking with rage.
“I’ll make sure he apologizes to Natalie,” I mumbled, my face as gloomy as a thundercloud.
Grace griped, finally turning the blame on me. “Landon, how could you let Natalie get her hands on that video? Now she’s got us by the short hairs. It’s gonna cost us more to smooth things over with her!
“Alright, we’ll handle the paperwork tomorrow. He doesn’t belong in Thorn Pack. Once I tell everyone in the group and cut the ties, Nathan won’t be your son anymore. Then Natalie will have nothing to throw at us. Besides, she’s okay. You two should just have a pure-blooded pup, and she’ll pipe down.”
When I heard that, a thought flitted through my mind.
Before, I wouldn’t have dreamed of sleeping with Natalie.
We weren’t bonded mates. I couldn’t take on the responsibility for Natalie, and I didn’t want her to hold a

kid over my head in the future when we had that tough conversation.
But now, Grace’s words made a whole lot of sense.

Even though Natalie had a feisty temper, I figured once she had a kid, she would be just like Aaliyah, all wrapped up in me and unable to let go.
Having a little one to keep her close, she’d be even more stuck to me. Then we’d see if she could still act so snooty!
But that thought flitted away in a blink. Right away, I stood up for Nathan. “Yeah, Nathan messed up, but he doesn’t deserve to be sent away. I’ll give him a good talking-to and make him stay in and think about it.”
He’s my own flesh and blood. After all the hassle of getting him back, there was no way I was dumping him!
“This is your dad’s and my call. You can go visit him later. Once you have your own kid…” Grace tried to convince me.
Hearing that, Nathan clung to my leg, scared out of his wits, and wailed, “Daddy! Don’t leave me! I wanna go home!”
“Hey, kid. If you don’t shape up, no one’s gonna want you. Just go quietly. Maybe next time someone takes you in, you’ll learn your lesson.” Grace’s teasing really got under my skin.
“Mom! Nathan’s my son! I’ll never send him away!” I scooped up the sobbing Nathan and walked right out of the ward, tuning out Louisa’s angry yells and Grace’s shrill screams behind me.
Nathan’s little body trembled as he clung to my shoulder, blubbering, “Sorry, Daddy… Don’t leave me… Waaah…”
I gently patted his back, my heart breaking. “Don’t worry. Daddy’s not gonna ditch you.”
I always thought I was cool and level-headed. For the sake of Thorn Pack’s interests and to get back what was mine, I could plot, make sacrifices, and even deceive Natalie, who once gave me her whole heart. I was used to playing the power game and using feelings as bargaining chips.
But now, holding my own son and feeling his instinctive fear and need for me, I started to question my long-held beliefs for the first time. Natalie made me think, and I really should have.
If only I’d had the guts to stand up to the family’s plans when Aaliyah was pregnant with Nathan, instead of hiding her away and letting her and our kid bear the shame.
If only my meeting with Natalie hadn’t been after that sneaky contract… maybe things would be different. “Landon! Stop right there!” Grace’s angry shout rang out in the empty corridor.
But I didn’t look back. Right now, protecting my boy was the most basic and unshakable instinct of a dad and an Alpha.
