Her wild rush for the phone sent my heart into my throat. I sprang to my feet, yanking her back and pinning her firmly on the couch. “What the hell are you doing?” I snapped.

Aaliyah shouted, “I should be asking you that, Landon! You’re throwing our son under the bus for your own good. Do you have any idea what they’ll do to Nathan? He’s just a five-year-old kid!”

“They won’t lay a finger on Nathan. You just need to go overseas. I’ll figure out a way to get Nathan back…” I tried to talk her round.

Aaliyah cut me off, “Is this really you, the Alpha I once knew?”

Tears streaming down her face, she lashed out, slapping me hard across the cheek. The stinging pain was a welcome distraction from the turmoil inside me. I stood there, letting her fists pummel me and her cries of anger fill the air until she finally collapsed, drained of all energy.

“Do you seriously think coming clean will solve everything and we can just be together?” I croaked, my voice hoarse with exhaustion. “Grandma holds Grandpa’s will. If we defy his last wishes, I’ll be left with nothing. How can I keep you and Nathan safe then?

“And if Natalie finds out we’re bonded, it’ll be a full-blown scandal! Our standing in the Maritime City werewolf circle will be toast!” I had to make her see the harsh truth.

Aaliyah fell silent, tears silently rolling down her face. That quiet despair was far more agonizing than her earlier outburst. All that filled the living room was the sound of her stifled sobs.

“I don’t want this mess to escalate any further, Aaliyah,” I tried to comfort her.

“Who sent that damned report?” Aaliyah demanded, her eyes blazing with determination through the

tears.

“I’ve got no clue. But it has to be someone close to us. Lay low and cut off contact with your old friends, Sofia included,” I warned.

“You’re actually suspecting my friends?” Her voice was laced with disbelief. Then, a spark of hope lit up her eyes. “I’m telling you, it’s Natalie. She’s the one we should be looking at!”

Just the mention of Natalie made my heart skip a beat. “No way it’s Natalie,” I shot back instinctively. “Why not? Think about it. Ever since I moved in, she’s been acting so off. She’s stopped caring about the company, our secret’s out, and now Nathan’s been snatched away…” Her words came in rapid fire, each one strengthening her conviction.

“Your nerves are fried,” I interjected, not willing to entertain the thought. If Natalie knew the truth, she’d go ballistic. She was a vulnerable half-breed Beta. Without the Thorn Pack’s protection, she’d be in a world of trouble. She was not the conniving type.

“Landon, it’s definitely Natalie! She’s getting back at us,” she insisted, her tone accusatory.

Frustration welled up inside me. “The human world has some top-notch educational opportunities. You’ve always dreamed of studying at a prestigious human university. Go ahead, check it out. I’ll foot the bill.”

. “Landon…”

Without waiting for Aaliyah to protest, I got up and walked out, the sound of the door shutting drowning out her potential breakdown. Leaning against the cold elevator wall, I balled my fist and punched the wall. The pain in my hand was a small price to pay for the overwhelming sense of powerlessness that enveloped

Aaliyah’s POV:

Gone. Just like that, he was gone, leaving me all alone in this godforsaken apartment, drowning in a sea of despair.

Landon! You spineless coward! Pathetic excuse for an Alpha!

In a fit of blind rage, I swept the crystal glass off the table. The shattering sound echoed through the room, a symphony of my breaking heart. I let out a wild scream, digging my nails into my palms so hard it was the only thing keeping me from completely losing it.

Why? Why the hell wouldn’t anyone believe me? Why did I have to be the one to swallow all this shit? Those geezers in Thorn Pack! And Natalie, that two-faced bitch, that half-breed trash! They were all going to pay!

The anger inside me was a wildfire, consuming every shred of my sanity. And then, the incessant buzzing of my phone cut through the chaos, like a cold splash of water on a burning fire.

It was Landon’s stupid alumni group. Someone was partying about something. I glanced over, bloodshot fixed on the screen. It was Norman Reeves. I recognized him. He was one of my former students. He switched from finance to journalism, and I was the one who gave him a leg up. Now he’s landed a gig at Maritime City TV?

The past came rushing back like a tidal wave.

Back in the day, while Landon was smitten with Natalie, Norman kept hovering around her nonstop. If I hadn’t stepped in and helped him transfer, Landon would’ve had an even tougher time winning Natalie
