“Online articles? They’re nothing but a load of bunk!” My voice, dripping with unwavering Alpha authority, rang out in the conference room. “The person in that article? There’s no way it’s Natalie. You’ve all seen how she is, her character and how she conducts herself.”

I enunciated every word deliberately, setting out the rules, “Let it be known. I don’t wanna hear a single rumor about Natalie in this company. Anyone caught spreading that slanderous piece gets the boot! And I’ll make sure they face the law.”

With that, I stormed out, the door slamming behind me, leaving stunned silence in my wake. I knew I’d been on edge at work lately, but right then, I didn’t give a damn. Those vile words were like barbed whips, lashing at my pride and the messy feelings I had for Natalic.

In my office, I tore at my tie, gasping for air, but my chest still felt like it was about to explode.

We’d been side by side for six long years! I knew Natalie better than anyone. That girl was as innocent as a lamb when it came to love. I’d pulled her out of the shadows and brought her into my world. I’d watched, her transform from a shy newbie to a confident pro, her eyes and heart set on work and me.

The thought of her flirting with Alphas? It was laughable. Getting her to flash a flirty smile at a business partner would be a tall order. She had a pride and integrity that ran deep in her veins, a quality she might not even fully realize she had.

Those slurs were an insult to everything she stood for!

I had to take action. I grabbed my phone and opened that chatty alumni group. It was filled with people snickering at Natalie’s supposed downfall and feigning sympathy for me. It made my blood boil.

My hands shaking, I typed out a message and hit send, “That article’s a complete fabrication! Natalie and I are head-over-heels for each other. Thanks, but keep your ‘concerns’ to yourselves.”

It wasn’t enough. I needed to hit harder.

I fired off another message, trying to shut down the gossip once and for all, “Natalie’s a top-notch employee. She’s hard-working and professional, and all our partners think the world of her. There’s zero truth to that slander. Cut it out. I’ve got my lawyer on it, and the one who started this will pay.”

After sending those messages and seeing my fierce defense on the screen, I felt a tiny bit of the anger ebb away. Yeah, that was right. She was my mate. Mess with her, and they were messing with me.

But just as I was starting to calm down, Aaliyah’s call came in like a bad omen.

Aaliyah’s POV:

I’d been eagerly awaiting Landon’s explosive reaction after he read the article. Picturing him kicking Natalie out and severing all ties with her brought a sick sort of thrill. But when I opened the alumni group chat, what greeted me was a slap in the face: Landon’s bold and unwavering defense of Natalie.

Why on earth? Why, even at this critical juncture, was he still shielding her? What harm could there be in exposing Natalie’s true colors to the Richardson family?

The fleeting sense of triumph was instantly replaced by a searing rage. Hands shaking, I punched in Landon’s number and bellowed into the receiver, “Landon! What the hell are you doing defending Natalie? Are you really that blind to the fact that she’s been two-timing you?”

“Aaliyah, you’re not thinking straight! That article is pure slander. I know Natalie inside out. She’s not capable of such things!” His immediate and wholehearted support felt like a betrayal, a stabbing pain deep in my chest.

I said, “But it’s from a verified account of a Maritime City TV reporter. There has to be some truth to it!”

“Reporters will do anything for a story. That Norman guy is a sleaze. Stay out of this mess and don’t go around spreading this crap!” he snapped.

And with that, he hung up. Staring at the dead phone, I was rooted to the spot, a coldness seeping through my veins.

Landon, you were a lost cause.
