Without waiting for an invitation, I pushed open the door to Natalie’s office. There she sat, behind that large desk, looking calm and composed. It was quite something for a half-blood Beta to pull off such an air. A faint trace of her scent lingered in the air. Hard to tell exactly what rank it signified, but it definitely wasn’t the powerful aura of a wolf-born. That just confirmed my thought that she was nothing more than a lucky girl, recognized by our father to be admitted into the pack on his deathbed.
“Natalie, I heard some pretty bad rumors about you today,” I said as I pulled out the chair opposite hers and took a seat. My tone held just the right mix of concern and distance. I was eager to see if she’d panic or come crawling to me for help.
Natalie remained unfazed, not even bothering to respond. Just sat there, quietly looking at me. There was no trace of the awe or unease a Beta should have when facing an Alpha in her eyes. That annoyed me.
“Before you came back to Moon-Shadowed Pack, I can understand you might’ve had a rough past to survive. That’s no big deal.” I leaned forward, releasing a bit of my high-ranking Alpha pressure. “But now that you’re the heir of Moon-Shadowed Pack, things are different. Bad press can be deadly for the pack’s. reputation. If the pack suffers because of this, you won’t be able to shoulder the blame.”
I waited for her reaction: fear, excuses, or a plea for help. But all she did was tilt her head and stay silent, looking at me as if she were the one judging me, not the other way around. It was infuriating.
Finally, my patience ran out. “Natalie, Mom and I have talked it over.” I leaned back in my chair, scoffed softly, and put on that condescending look we wolves use in negotiations. “We can keep a mid-level position for you in the Scott Group. But you have to give up most of the inheritance and return over seventy percent of it. It’s the best way for you to bow out gracefully.”
Natalie actually laughed, with a hint of mockery, “The offer’s getting better. Looks like your mother thinks a bit more of me now?”
That response really ticked me off. My smile froze, and my pheromones flared up for a moment. I lowered my voice, warning, “Natalie, I suggest you think this through. Do you really think the Scott Group or Moon-Shadowed Pack is as simple as you imagine? Let me tell you, Sir Scott, our Alpha leader, will be back in a month. He’s worried about leaving the pack in the hands of a young, half-blood nobody like you.
“If he doesn’t approve of you, none of the wolves in Moon-Shadowed Pack will. Then you’ll be everyone’s target. These little rumors will make you the laughingstock of the whole werewolf community, Natalie, I’m doing this for your own good. Step away from the power center, and you can still be a well-off noble lady in Moon-Shadowed Pack. We can just stay out of each other’s way.” I thought I was being really sincere.
But she seemed to find it even funnier. Her look clearly said, “Do you think I’m stupid?”
“Mr. Scott, why don’t you check your phone for the news?” Natalie said, her eyes wandering back to her own phone, as casually as if talking about the weather.
My heart plummeted. Following her words, I whipped out my phone. In a mere dozen minutes, the trending topics had done a complete 180.

Maritime City TV had yanked the post and issued an apology, claiming it was the doing of an individual employee and that they’d handed the matter over to the cops. Moon-Shadowed Pack’s lawyer letters were like sharp arrows, zeroing in on every rumor-monger accurately. The impact had been curbed to the bare minimum. And since her yet-to-be-made-public status as the Moon-Shadowed Pack’s heir, most of the blame landed on the fabricators.
My eyes dimmed. Natalie was lightning-fast.
“The news might be hushed up, but the past never truly fades,” I said, tucking my phone away. My tone turned frosty as I attempted to reclaim control of the situation. “Natalie, you didn’t grow up shielded by the pack as a pure-blood. Can you really be sure there won’t be more rumors or, worse, real scandals down the road?” It was a clear-cut threat.
She stared me down without a hint of fear, a touch of pity in her eyes. “You know, big shots always catch flak. Sure, I can’t make any guarantees. But I swear on my life I’ve never done anything to disgrace the Moon Goddess or the pack.” Natalie paused for a beat, then her voice got sharp as a blade. “And if a bit of fake news can rattle the pack and the Scott Group, it just goes to show we’re a bunch of losers.”
