Her words cut like a knife into my conscience. Ten long years she’d dedicated to me, even going through the risk of giving birth to Nathan.
My heart softened. With a sigh, I pulled her close, stroking her back in comfort. “Don’t fret. My lawyer knows how to handle this. He’ll deal with the human police. Norman’s family is short on cash. Since you managed to buy him off, we can smooth this over. I’ll make sure he keeps quiet.”
Without delay, I reached out to the lawyer retained by the Richardson Group, instructing him to pull out all the stops to persuade Norman to shoulder the blame alone.
Aaliyah’s nerves settled a bit. Her eyes glistening with unshed tears, she nodded, burying her face in my chest.
Meanwhile, my headache was getting worse by the minute. I massaged my temples hard. One problem after another had been piling up, and I’d been tossing and turning at night for ages. Before, Natalie would’ve noticed my distress right away. She’d fix me a nerve-calming tonic and coax me to take a break. from work. She’d handle all those pesky meetings and paperwork without a word.
What if Natalie were here with me now?
The thought hooked onto my heart, squeezing it painfully.
Natalie’s POV:
I returned to my apartment earlier than usual, seeking solace in my little sanctuary. After a quick shower to wash off the day’s weariness, it was just past eight. Eyeing the fresh produce I’d picked up from the supermarket, I hesitated for a moment before dialing Leonardo’s number. I was hoping he could come over for dinner, like a regular couple about to tie the knot in the werewolf world.
On the other end of the line, his voice was steady, but there was a hint of apology. “Sorry, I left for an important meeting in another state this afternoon and won’t be back tonight.”
A twinge of disappointment hit me, but it passed quickly. Since Leonardo couldn’t make it, I decided to treat myself. I whipped up a few of my favorite dishes, and the delicious aroma filled the kitchen. Feeling like I needed a drink to go with my meal, I instinctively mixed a “Polar Cold Night”-the same pale-blue concoction I’d made for Leonardo that day.
Taking a sip, the cold liquid sent a shiver down my spine. Memories of that day came flooding back- Leonardo, the aloof Silver-Maned Pack heir, acting so clingy around me. Wherever I went, he was right there, his silent presence a clear sign of his possessiveness and affection.
A smile spread across my face at the thought.
Maybe it was the alcohol or the exhaustion catching up with me, but I dozed off on the couch. I was jolted awake by my phone vibrating at eleven at night.
Groggily, I answered the call. Leonardo’s deep voice came through. “Asleep?”

“N-Not yet,” I said, rubbing my eyes and sitting up straight. My voice was thick with sleep, but I tried to sound alert. “What’s up? Is the meeting over?”
“Yes.” Leonardo’s voice was so close it seemed he was right beside my ear, magnetic with a hint of alluring hoarseness. “I miss you.”
Those three words jolted me like an electric current, chasing away all my drowsiness. My cheeks flushed uncontrollably.
“Me… too,” I mumbled so softly and quickly that the words were almost lost. I was afraid that if he heard clearly, he’d say more things to make my heart race. So I quickly changed the subject. “I wanted to have dinner with you today. Bought a bunch of stuff, but didn’t cook since you weren’t, around.”
“If I’d known there’d be a yummy meal waiting, I wouldn’t have gone to that meeting for anything,” Leonardo said, genuine regret in his voice.
“No, work comes first,” I replied softly, but inside, I was floating on a cloud of sweetness because of his concern. “There’ll be plenty of chances for you to have your favorite food later…” Just like he said, we had all the time in the world. The thought of the future made my heart all warm and fuzzy.
“Where are you now?” he suddenly asked.
