The dial tone on the phone sent a bolt of fury through me. “Natalie!” I roared, and the veins on my forehead were pulsing.
How dared she hang up on me! Right in front of me and Grandma, she’d flat-out said she wanted to break the bond with me-and that we were done!
At first, her words gave me a real scare. I was terrified she’d found out about the fake bond. But then I thought, there was no way she could know.If she did, where’d a helpless half-blood Beta like her get the guts to be so cocky-especially with no Thorn Pack protecting her?
Mom was right. Natalie was just being a pain in the neck, using Aaliyah’s mess to force me to give in and make the Richardson family cave to her demands!
Louisa was clearly caught off guard, too. She’d tried to give Natalie an easy way out, but Natalie just slapped her in the face by bringing up breaking the bond. She stood there, stunned, almost choking on her breath. Her face was a mix of shock and angry offense.
“Is Natalie out of her mind? Does she really want to break the bond with you?” Louisa’s voice quivered with disbelief.
“Don’t be mad, Grandma. Natalie’s just saying things in the heat of the moment!” I rushed to soothe her, scared she’d get herself sick. But inside, I was seething, too.
Louisa snapped out of her daze and let out a cold laugh, a palpable sense of betrayal in the air. “I used to think your mom was overreacting. Thought a well-behaved girl like Natalie wouldn’t be so unreasonable. But I was dead wrong. She has no sense of her own limits!”
Seeing Louisa finally turn against Natalie, Grace heaved a sigh of relief and quickly spoke up, “You’re right! I reckon Natalie’s just been coddled too much. She needs a taste of her own medicine. Maybe if we just give her the cold shoulder, she’ll come running back with her tail between her legs!”
Louisa took a deep breath. Her eyes still held a hint of concern for the family’s interests. “But without Natalie, what about those company projects with other packs?” She’d noticed these past few days that the company’s in a bit of a pickle.”
“Don’t fret about the funds.” A calm, self-assured voice came from the doorway. It was my dad, Benjamin, striding into the living room, having clearly caught wind of our chat.
“Benjamin!” Grace’s face lit up, and she scurried over to take his coat.
I hung my head, feeling a knot in my stomach. After all, I hadn’t managed to do what he’d asked me to before he left.
But Benjamin seemed in high spirits today. Without a word of scolding, he walked straight to Louisa and took a seat. “Don’t worry your head about the company, Mom. I’ve lined up a feal heavy-hitter as an investor.”

He looked around at all of us, in full control. “Who cares about Natalie? With this backer, we won’t have to worry about taking the company public or upping the pack’s status!”
Hearing his words, Grace and Louisa got all excited. Grace asked eagerly, “Is it Mr. Whitman?”
I knew who she meant, Herman Whitman. I remembered Benjamin had some well-off old friends, and Herman was the big success story, his real-estate business booming in recent years.
“Mr. Whitman?” Benjamin snorted and tapped his finger on the sofa armrest. “He’s somebody in his own little world, but next to our investor, he’s a small fry.”
He fixed his eyes on me, as if sizing me up. “Landon, tell me. In Maritime City, which family rules the roost in the werewolf business scene?”
My heart skipped a beat, and an almost crazy thought popped into my head. “Is it the Scott family, the ones leading Moon-Shadowed Pack?”
“The Scott family of Moon-Shadowed Pack?” Grace shrieked with excitement, practically leaping toward Benjamin. Her eyes sparkled with avarice as she demanded, “Benjamin, is it really them?”
“Sure thing. It’s the Scott Group that’s decided to sink a fortune into our company. They’re the top one in the werewolf business in Maritime City,” Benjamin replied coolly, though a hint of pride played on his features.
“Amazing! With their investment, what do we have to worry about? Who needs Natalie? From now on, our Thorn Pack will be a force to be reckoned with in Maritime City!” Grace babbled on, already daydreaming about the Richardson family hobnobbing with the city’s high-society.
Even Louisa, usually so composed, couldn’t hide her excitement. Her voice trembled as she asked, “Benjamin, are you sure it’s the Scott family? How on earth did you manage to snag an investment from them?”
Getting into business with Moon-Shadowed Pack, let alone securing an investment, was like winning the lottery!
Benjamin clearly enjoyed the looks of shock and admiration on our faces. A self-satisfied smirk spread across his face.
Meanwhile, after the initial shock, a wild idea popped into my head. I recalled the mysterious Scott family heiress I’d met in the parking lot. She’d sat in the car, never showing her face, but had taken my business card. Could it be her who’d decided to invest in our Thorn Pack? My heart started to pound, as if I’d just caught a glimpse of a better future that didn’t depend on Natalie.
