Samuel’s obedience pleased me. Twenty years of discipline had worked. He was still my most loyal tool.

I said, “From the day I adopted you, I told you I don’t raise failures.”

“I was wrong. I won’t let you down,” he said.

“Go take a shower and change. Then meet me in the study,” I said, my anger completely gone after looking him over. Then I turned and left.

Half an hour later, Samuel walked into the study looking like his usual self, with an impeccable black suit, perfect tie, and calm eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses. If not for the faint, tired redness still lingering at the corners of his eyes, no one would guess he’d just spent four hours kneeling in a dark room.

It was good. A werewolf must learn to hide their pain. That was the first rule of survival.

“I have a job for you,” I said, sliding a freshly printed document across the desk.

Samuel picked it up and skimmed the contents. A flicker of surprise passed through his eyes.

He asked, “You’re making a move against the Silver-Maned Pack?”

“Don’t question what isn’t your concern,” I said, my voice turning cold. “Your job is to execute. If you fail at this again, I will be thoroughly disappointed.”

He knew exactly what “thoroughly disappointed” meant-losing my favor, losing everything in Moon-Shadowed Pack, and even his life. I never kept useless pieces on the board.

“But the company…” He hesitated.

“Take a few days off from the company. Consider it an explanation to Natalie,” I cut him off, leaving no room for argument. “You messed up. I don’t have the energy to shield you. Follow company procedure. Natalie can’t do much to you.”

Samuel was silent for a few seconds before finally bowing his head. “Understood. I’ll go back to the office first and hand over my current tasks.”

After he left, I opened my computer and pulled up the encrypted file on Ryan.

He was Leonardo’s father, the former leader of the Silver-Maned Pack. Ten years ago, he made an enemy of a certain dark organization.

The sins of the father were passed to the son. It was only natural.

Samuel’s POV:

Still hungover from last night, I was roused from sleep by Lily this morning.

My plan was to find somewhere to recover, but Penelope’s people had been looking for me. Not long after I left Lily’s place, they intercepted me on the road.

Four hours of kneeling was nothing. I endured longer-two weeks in that airless basement room, with only water and dry bread. I was twelve then.

From the dark room to the study, from the study to the office, my body moved, but my mind felt adrift on a cold, numb sea.

By the time I finished handing over my duties at the office, it was already evening. Just as I was about to leave, I noticed a shadow moving in my office. I pushed the door open. It was Lily.

She was dressed differently today. She usually dressed casually, but today she wore a form- fitting knit dress. It hugged her slender frame, showing off her curves. Paired with her still somewhat youthful face, it gave her a different kind of appeal.

“Looking for me?” I asked, glancing at her before leaning against the doorframe.

She should have been out of work hours ago. With her bag on her shoulder, she was clearly waiting for me.

She turned and nodded. “Yeah. About last night…”

“I was drunk last night. I might have acted out of line,” I said with a scoff. “You’re not planning to report me for harassment again, are you?”

Truth was, I couldn’t remember exactly what happened. I just remembered drinking a lot and going to Lily’s apartment. Then I woke up with her shaking me, leaving with a splitting headache.

“No,” Lily said, looking up at me. She seemed to struggle for words. “I was thinking I’d like to buy you dinner.”

I was taken aback.

Buy me dinner? Was this the same woman who practically threw me out yesterday?

I walked closer and reached out, placing my hand on her forehead. My palm met cool skin. She jerked back immediately.

“Do you have a fever?” I asked.

She said, “Mr. Scott! I’m fine. If you don’t want to go, just forget it.”

She was about to bolt again. Instinctively, I caught her arm and held on tightly, pulling her so close she almost stumbled into me. I towered over her by a head. Looking down, I could easily surround her. I caught the faint scent of laundry detergent on her, mixed with the weak but clean pheromones of a Beta.

“Did the sun rise from the west this morning?” I narrowed my eyes, studying her with amusement. “I thought you couldn’t stand me.”

She blinked. Her face showed poorly hidden pretense, but her voice was soft. “When did I ever say I couldn’t stand you?”

For a moment, I almost wondered if she was deliberately flirting with me.

But I asked, “Weren’t you the one who wanted to throw me out and call the police just last night?”

I leaned in deliberately, close to her lips, my tone lazy and teasing. “Lily, what exactly are you up to?”

My larger frame cast an invisible pressure. My breath ghosted over her temple. “Or… did I do something to you last night when I was blackout drunk? Something you can’t forget?”

“Stop talking nonsense!” Her ears turned bright red. Her palms pressed gently against my chest, pushing me away. “I just want to repay you for the last time. After this meal, we’re even.”

Her voice grew softer as she spoke, and her eyes darted around, avoiding mine. Such a lame excuse-she probably didn’t even believe it herself.

I studied her for a long moment, as if trying to see right through her. I genuinely hadn’t expected Lily to seek me out.

My mood was already bad-kneeling in punishment, suspended from work, treated by Penelope as a disposable pawn. Using this woman for a little distraction might not be so bad.

I wanted to see what game she was really playing.

I picked an expensive private werewolf chef’s restaurant and booked a secluded private room. The chef was specially invited from Kaelis City. A single meal here could cost Lily more than half a month’s salary, but she didn’t seem to mind at all.

During the meal, she kept sneaking glances at me. I noticed. After eating for a while, I said abruptly, “Am I that good-looking?”

My question pulled her out of her thoughts. She immediately looked down.

Her silence annoyed me. I stared at her. “I asked you a question.”

“I was just thinking about something,” Lily said gently.

“That’s not what I asked. I asked if you think I’m good-looking.” I was pretty confident about my looks.

She hesitated, then nodded. “Mr. Scott, you are quite good-looking.” The reluctance in her tone was plain as day. That stung more than if she’d outright called me ugly.

My face paled slightly. The food suddenly seemed flavorless. She always knew how to easily stir my anger or stir up something more complicated in me.
