I cleared my throat softly. Natalie rushed over again. “No. I think I should call the doctor back. Have him check on you!”
“The doctor just left less than an hour ago,” I said, catching her wrist. I could feel the warm pulse beneath her skin. “I just need rest. The medicine will help.”
“But…” She bit her lower lip.
“Natalie, can you sometimes respect the patient’s wishes?” I said, my voice quiet but serious.
“Alright,” she sighed. She handed me the water and fed me the pills.
After watching me swallow everything, she tucked the blanket tighter around my legs and tried to help me to the bedroom.
“I don’t want to sleep yet,” I murmured. I pulled her down to sit beside me, drawing her into my arms. “What did Matthew want today?” I needed the distraction, something to pull me from the dark thoughts.
O
“It was more the Scott Group’s business. Penelope’s been trying to make me slip up there. She’s running out of people to use, so she went to Uncle Matthew…” Natalie trailed off, probably worried I’d dwell on it. “Anyway, we talked it out. Uncle Matthew isn’t like Penelope. He’s not so obsessed with power.”
“This time, Penelope tried to use me to distract you?” I guessed, even if Natalie didn’t spell it out. Penelope was Alexander’s mate, always eyeing the legacy and status he left behind. Right after I was injured, my first order to Aaron was to lock down the news. Natalie shouldn’t have known unless someone leaked it on
purpose.
“Don’t worry. She can’t distract me. The Moon-Shadowed Pack inheritance is mine. What can she really do?” Natalie said quickly, trying to reassure me.
She must have seen the light dim in my eyes. Penelope was only capable of petty moves. And with Silver- Maned Pack as Natalie’s backing-a force that intimidated most werewolves-even Penelope’s best efforts might not scratch the surface.
But I knew what it was like-the constant wariness, no real sense of safety at home. I’d lived that way since I was a boy.
Natalie was stubborn, though. The bigger the challenge, the harder she pushed. She was determined to prove she had the ability and the strength not just to inherit Moon-Shadowed Pack, but to make it better. And of course, I would support her completely.
“In the future, you don’t need to act impulsively for my sake. The Scott Group’s project is important. You ‘shouldn’t have left,” I said, frowning. My voice was calm, but each word carried a weight of guilt. I never ‘liked being a burden, especially not to my own mate.
Natalie sighed, “Someone who’s always impulsive is crazy. But someone who’s always calm isn’t human.” She paused, her voice softening. “I try to do the right thing. But sometimes, I just need to follow my heart.”

Her voice was gentle now. She rested her head against my chest, listening to my steady heartbeat. I could feel her body relax, that deep trust and security built between mates.
“Natalie, can I ask you something?” My voice dropped suddenly, heavy with hesitation. The question had been circling in my mind for a long time. Victoria’s message today had made it all the more acute.
Natalie rarely heard me sound so uncertain. She looked at me, puzzled. “Go ahead,” she said. Her eyes were like warm amber in the dim light.
“What do you like about me?” I asked, bowing my head slightly. A trace of unease lingered between my
brows.
I stopped, then quickly added, “I mean… what if I turned out to be nothing like you imagined? Or if the person you think I am is just a surface, and I’m not as good as you believe…”
Natalie’s POV:
“Is it that the more capable someone is, the harder they are on themselves?” I couldn’t help but laugh. cutting him off.
I understood. Leonardo wasn’t coddled as a child. Ryan was too harsh and demanding, probably leaving Leonardo with some insecurities. It was common among Alpha werewolves, and many pack leaders were harsh when training their heirs.
But he was still Leonardo, the sole heir of the Sanchez family, the Alpha of Silver-Maned Pack, and the powerful head of the Sanchez Group. In business, he could make things happen with a snap of his fingers. Without all those titles, he was still a striking figure-tall and strong, carrying the undeniable aura of a top- tier Alpha.
When I first met him, I never dreamed I could talk about love with someone like him. If anyone should feel insecure here, it should be me, a hybrid Beta who once thought she was just human. How could I be worthy of the Silver-Maned Pack’s Alpha?
“Tell me,” Leonardo said, not acknowledging my tease. He looked at me with utter sincerity, as if he absolutely needed a concrete answer from me. His eyes held a rare vulnerability, a side Alphas seldom showed.
I thought seriously for a moment, then answered with care, “There are plenty of good things about you that I like. But I don’t like you just because of your strengths. It’s because being with you makes me happy. It makes me hopeful about life. I really want to spend the rest of my life with you, just like this.”
