“Your former mate’s grandmother?” Cameron’s words caught me off guard. Then I realized he already knew about my bond dissolution with Landon. It was Sofia-that night I got drunk at Sofia’s bar, Cameron was the one who picked me up. Cameron was my boss, yet Sofia had told him things she shouldn’t have. I ended up getting into a big fight with Sofia later.

But… Sofia had shown some restraint. She only mentioned that Landon and I were ending our bond, attributing it to pack opposition and his change of heart. She didn’t mention Natalie at all.

I nodded, going along with it. “Yes, his grandmother passed. Even though we’d broken the bond, I should go back and pay my respects to her.”

“That’s understandable.” Cameron nodded, asking no further questions. He took out his phone and made a few taps. “I’ve approved remote work access for you. Manage your time as needed. Handling family matters comes first.”

“Thank you, Mr. Parker.” His reasonableness took me by surprise. I quickly added, “I’ll wrap things up and return as soon as possible.”

“The company was planning to send you to Maritime City anyway. You getting a head start on the project assessment there works out the same,” Cameron said. His tone was casual, as if it were just a regular work arrangement.

He was right. I hadn’t been in Kaelis City long, and Gallop Energy’s key projects would eventually require me to return to the more familiar Maritime City. This suited me perfectly.

“Aaliyah,” he said thoughtfully, his voice unusually clear in the enclosed space of the car. “Some… unhealthy relationships can ruin a person’s life. Since you’d decided to end that relationship, I hope you can stay rational.”

I was momentarily speechless. The version Sofia gave him was that Landon had betrayed and hurt me, hence the ongoing bond dissolution. But Cameron didn’t know that I was the one refusing to end the bond, and he might even be worried I’d get entangled with Landon again if I went back.

“Don’t worry,” I said, and since it was too complicated to explain, I just nodded along. “Most male Alphas are like that, not as loyal as females. I’ll stay rational.” My words carried a hint of sorrow and self-mockery.

Silence settled in the car, filled only by the low hum of the engine. The scent of alcohol seemed to rise from Cameron’s body with his warmth, making the air feel subtly charged. He glanced at me, his gaze lingering on my face.

Suddenly, he reached over and gently covered my hand where it rested on the steering wheel.

“Actually, not all male Alphas are the same,” he said, his voice a shade deeper. “Some are capable of deep loyalty.”

“Mr. Parker…” The sudden contact startled me, and I instinctively hit the brake, causing the car to lurch slightly.

Cameron seemed to realize the inappropriateness and withdrew his hand immediately. He picked up the coffee cup beside him and took a sip, hiding his embarrassment, his eyes turning to the lights outside the window.

My heart began to race uncontrollably, and my pheromones fluctuated slightly. Before this, I had seen his care and appreciation as nothing more than professional courtesy of a superior. I had never dared to consider that an Alpha of Cameron’s standing might have these kinds of feelings for me.

It was a lot to process, and my mind was buzzing, with my thoughts jumbled. Putting aside my obsession with Landon, I thought Cameron was undoubtedly an attractive and powerful prospect. His background, his capability, and the clear interest he was showing-so different from Landon’s weakness and indecision-were all shaking my resolve.

Silence returned to the car, but an ambiguous tension hung in the air. We both silently agreed not to mention the brief moment, as if it had never happened..

The rest of the drive passed in silence until I stopped the car outside his apartment. He simply nodded before getting out and walking away.

Cameron’s POV:

Back home, a vague feeling of restlessness still lingered.

However, the lights in the living room were still on late at night. Someone was waiting for me.

It was the head of the private investigation agency I had hired. My spirits lifted momentarily, pushing the tangled thoughts about Aaliyah out of my mind. The search for my sister, who had been missing for years, seemed to have taken a new turn.

Natalie’s POV:

The morning sun filtered through the gap between the curtains, casting a warm spot of light on the bedroom floor. I woke up feeling warm and secure. Leonardo’s arm was draped around my waist. His head was resting in the bend of my shoulder, and his breathing was even and deep.

He was usually a light sleeper. Even with medication, he typically woke long before I did, and his sleep had improved slightly with treatment, but he still usually woke first. It was rare for
