It was deep into the night. On the top-floor executive office of the Richardson Group building, the only illumination came from the computer screen, casting a ghostly blue glow on my haggard face. The data on the reports looked like gibberish, and I simply couldn’t focus.

Suddenly, a knock on the door jolted me from my daze. Instantly, Natalie’s image popped into my head. I shot up from my seat and flung the door “Na…”

open.

“Mr. Richardson, here are the materials you requested. I just wrapped up organizing them,” a young woman, whose face was unfamiliar to me, said.

Oh, right, she was the new project assistant.

I took the materials with a nod and asked, “Still working this late? Shouldn’t you head home?”

“The project department is swamped. A bunch of us are still here grinding. Thanks for asking, Mr. Richardson,” she replied, blushing slightly.

Then she gave a polite nod and scurried off.

Indeed, the project department was the front line of the company, always buried under a mountain of tasks.

When Natalie was around, the team was incredibly efficient. Most of the time, everyone could clock out on schedule. Even when overtime was needed, Natalie would always be the one to stay back alone.

I’d sometimes stay with her during those long nights, but I’d often doze off in the office.

So, Natalie was always the last to leave. The real hard worker was never me.

Just as I was in a state of turmoil, my private phone rang with a number I rarely saw. My heart skipped a beat. It was my grandma, Louisa.

Louisa was a lover of solitude, living in a sprawling mansion on the outskirts of a nearby city. She hardly ever allowed family visits, except during holidays.

So, a call from her was highly unusual.

I took a deep breath, trying to sound calm as I answered, “Grandma, it’s so late. What’s up?”

Louisa’s voice, old yet authoritative, boomed through the phone, “I’ve heard some talk. What’s going on between you and Natalie?”

I swallowed hard. “Grandma, where’d you hear that? Natalie and I are doing great.”

“Great?” Louisa scoffed, “Great, and she’d move out of the pack’s territory? Landon, don’t lie to

me.”

Realizing Louisa was more informed than I’d thought, I tried to explain, half-truthfully, “Just some small squabbles. It happens between mates. It’s already getting better. We’ll sort it out in a few days.”

Louisa said, her voice growing serious, “Natalie isn’t the type to leave over trifles. We can’t sort this out over the phone. I’m coming back tomorrow. You’ll explain everything to me then. And bring Natalie. While I’m here, I can help you two work it out… Soul mates are meant to be together. You young people just don’t know how to value your bond!”

“Grandma, there’s no need to trouble yourself. Natalie and I can handle it,” I pleaded, but Louisa was as stubborn as a mule. She hung up before I could say more.

I put down the phone, feeling a headache coming on. Louisa was the former Luna of Thorn Pack. Even in her seclusion, her influence in the pack remained strong. In the Richardson family, she was the only one who’d always stood by Natalie.

Back then, when I brought Natalie, a half-breed Beta of unknown origin, into the Richardson family, the entire family was against it. It was Louisa who stood up for us, overriding all the objections and giving her consent for us to be together.

Even before she left after my grandpa passed away, she held our hands tightly and seriously admonished me, “Natalie may not have a prominent bloodline or the backing of a family, but she has a clear look in her eyes and a simple nature. She loves you wholeheartedly. Since you’ve chosen her, you must take on the responsibility of an Alpha and never let her down. I’ve lived through a lot. In this cold world, a sincere heart is more precious than any pure-blood lineage. You two should support each other until the end.”

Now, as I recalled Natalie’s words, apart from the guilt of being caught in a lie, there was also a heavy sense of loss that I didn’t even realize I had. It was as if I had lost a precious treasure that an elder had earnestly told me to take good care of.

But after a moment of daze, an idea perked me up. Maybe Grandma’s return could be the turning point to mend things between Natalie and me. I immediately sent a message to Natalie.

Louisa’s POV:

Not wanting to listen to Landon’s excuses, I hung up the phone right away. I was old and didn’t want to meddle in pack affairs, but I couldn’t forget the dying wish of my mate. As long as I was alive, I’d make sure Landon and Natalie stayed together.

I knew Landon well. Although he seemed to weigh every decision, he was incredibly stubborn deep down.

Besides Natalie, I was afraid no one else could keep him in check. Especially that past entanglement of his, which posed endless hidden dangers.
