Sabrina couldn't have cared less that Martin was moving out. The absolute worst-case scenario was a divorce, and as long as she kept her hands on the shares, she didn't care about anything else.
Despite being with Martin all these years, she hadn't actually gotten much out of it. It was pathetic, really. He was a corporate chairman, yet he had never even bought her a single piece of real estate.
Before she moved into the Mercer Estate, she had been living in a rental.
Of course, Martin had covered the rent.
Sabrina knew that before the old lady fell into a coma, the matriarch kept a stranglehold on the family's finances. Even though Brandon managed the company, he wouldn't dare embezzle funds. Martin had to pinch pennies just to pay her rent, raise her child, and provide her with an allowance.
She only enjoyed two years of actual luxury after entering the Mercer household before the family's fortunes plummeted.
During those years, the traditional business was already faltering, so Martin never had the spare cash to buy her extravagant gifts.
The most she had ever squeezed out of him was a modest wedding and a luxury apartment for Bella—and even that had taken serious manipulation from both mother and daughter.
For years, the two of them had maintained a flawless facade. Even though Sabrina harbored endless complaints about Martin, the allure of the Mercer wealth and social standing kept her from burning the bridge entirely.
Besides, she had never managed to find a man quite as hopelessly romantic and willing to sacrifice everything for her as Martin.
Whenever they were desperately short on cash, she and Bella would occasionally seek out other men to fund their lifestyles.
But those men were always short-term flings, playing transactional games for sex before moving on to fresh prey. Bella had done the same, selling her dignity to older men for hefty sums.
