Bella marched upstairs, leaving Sabrina mortified.
Brandon clapped his hands slowly. "Bella has quite the personality these days. You've taught her well, Sabrina."
"She's not usually like this," Sabrina stammered. "Brandon, you could have smoothed things over."
"What's there to smooth over?" Brandon shot back. "This is exactly who she is. She doesn't respect anyone." He turned to Beatrice with a polite smile. "Please excuse her, Beatrice. That's just how she behaves."
Beatrice glared at Martin.
Martin hurriedly tried to salvage the situation. "Beatrice, I'm so sorry. I should have warned the younger generation you were coming. Sabrina is right, she's normally not this temperamental. She's just been under a lot of pressure at work. Please don't take offense. Let's head up to the study to talk."
Sabrina's blood boiled. The study. Again.
Every time these people visited, they sequestered themselves in the study. Who were they hiding from? Was she considered an outsider in her own home?
Once the Mercers and the Winthrops went upstairs, Sabrina carried a plate of fruit to Bella's room.
"Who exactly are these people, Mom? Have you looked into them?"
"How could I? You know how this circle works. I'm married to Martin, but high society still rejects me. I can't just magically uncover their backgrounds. I know their last name is Winthrop, and they were close friends with that old comatose patriarch. Every time they visit, that old man looks at me like I'm trash and demands they talk in private. It's infuriating. After everything I've done to get here, I still have to swallow their insults."
Bella pondered the name Winthrop. There were no prominent Winthrop families in Northwyn's current elite circles.
"Forget them," Bella concluded. "They act like royalty, but they're nobodies.
