When Lucas hesitated, Debbie dug her fingers in harder. "Speak! What do you mean my discharge is a pipe dream?
I know I broke some ribs and got banged up, but I should be out of here in two weeks tops.
My son has endless money. They're giving me the best medicine in the world. I'll recover fast.
Why are you saying I won't get out? What did you hear?
Does my son want to trap me in this hospital until I die? Is he trying to mess with my treatment so I can never leave?"
Seeing Debbie grow more frantic, her voice steadily rising, Lucas panicked.
The nurses on the night shift were dozing off outside. If she woke them up and he was found in here, he’d have no way to explain himself.
"Debbie, stop yelling! There are people outside. Besides the doctors and nurses, there are bodyguards stationed at your door.
They only take a break for a midnight snack right about now, which is the only reason I could sneak in.
Calm down. Look, I'll just tell you. You have cancer. You're sick. Didn't you know?"
Debbie froze. "What? Cancer? Bullshit! I felt perfectly fine before this. Not even a cold, and you’re telling me I have cancer?"
"It's true," Lucas insisted. "I overheard the doctors and nurses talking, and I quietly checked with a nurse. You really are sick. You're going to be in here for long-term treatment. Why would I lie to you?"
"Impossible. Absolutely impossible," Debbie muttered, shaking her head. "How could I be sick?"
"Look, if you don't believe me, there's nothing I can do. But it's true. I have zero reason to lie.
I think it's lung or kidney cancer. Whatever it is, they're planning a second surgery as soon as you're strong enough."
Debbie's eyes widened in realization. "If you're not lying, then they are! I'm definitely not sick.
It's my son. It's his scheme! He must have come up with this sick method to torture me.
The only thing that mattered was splitting the money.
He was owed forty million dollars. Once that cash was in his hands, he could live like a king.
"Debbie, don't jump straight to conspiracy theories about your own son. He's your flesh and blood; why would he do that? But hey, if you're really worried, let's split the cash first, and then figure out your next move.
Once the money is in your hands, you'll have a million ways to get out of this hospital.
With hundreds of millions of dollars, money talks. You can buy your way out.
Then you can find out for sure if you're actually sick or if your son is plotting against you.
Leaving it all in one account is too risky.
Why don't we find a way to get the money into our own hands? That way, we can use it whenever we want. Doesn't that sound better?"
