Bella rented a car through an agency, knowing perfectly well that Lucas would instantly recognize her usual ride.
Lucas wasn't going to sit quietly in his hospital room—that was a given.
Furthermore, the document she had snatched clearly stated that the replacement ID could be picked up today.
Recalling how desperate Lucas had been to avoid her "company" at the hospital, she was confident he was anxious to retrieve Debbie's ID as soon as possible.
With so many guards stationed outside Debbie's door, the older woman definitely wasn't leaving.
Besides, Bella still wasn't entirely sure what Debbie's true physical condition was.
Just as Bella was analyzing the situation, she spotted Lucas walking out of the hospital.
As expected!
The man simply couldn't stay put.
Bella tailed him closely. He picked up the ID, then made a trip to a bank.
It seemed the bank visit didn't go smoothly. He emerged looking utterly defeated, hailed a cab, and returned to the hospital, not stepping foot outside again.
Bella figured out a way back into The Prestige Wing. As luck would have it, a room diagonally across from Lucas's was vacant, so she registered and checked herself in.
She originally had the privilege to pick an exclusive suite in The Prestige Wing, and now that perk was proving exceptionally useful.
She had to admit, the fringe benefits attached to being Sebastian Blake's wife were incredibly convenient.
Once settled into the room, Bella didn't let the strategic location go to waste. She pulled a chair right up to the door and sat down, keeping a hawk-like watch on the hallway outside.
Lucas never came back out. Bella guessed no opportunities would present themselves during daylight hours.
He had likely run all the errands he could outside. For the hurdles he'd hit, he probably needed to consult with Debbie before proceeding.
She had brought her laptop when checking in, though she was entirely unmotivated to work.
Still, it was the perfect time to check the status of Debbie's ID and the SIM card she held in her possession.
Sure enough, an oversight she hadn't noticed before was now glaringly obvious. The real-name registration was entirely wiped, and the phone number was on the verge of being recycled.
How interesting. This was truly fascinating.
She hadn't sensed even a fraction of a clue that Lucas and Debbie had executed such a massive move behind her back. It was utterly despicable.
They completely disregarded her, scheming in the shadows for the ransom. That was $1.2 billion! She hadn't even planned to monopolize the funds, yet they conspired to carve up her share too.
Damn them!
Birds of a feather really did flock together. Lucas deserved to serve that old woman. He absolutely had it coming.
