Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 147

Victor scratched his head. "No way. How could I be mistaken?"

"And how could I possibly forget to turn off my computer?" Lillian countered with a smile.

Victor thought about it. Maybe he really was mistaken.

Who was Lillian?

She was an ace.

How could she be so careless as to not turn off her computer?

Thinking it over, Victor concluded that he must have been wrong.

He definitely saw it wrong.

An ace would never make such a mistake.

Lillian drove Victor to the hotel first.

"The company has cars. Why don't you take one for yourself?"

She was already running late for her scheduled return time with Leonard, and driving Victor would make her even later. She was sure to get an earful from him about damaging his 'reserved' kidney.

Lillian had a responsibility to the kidney she'd promised to donate to Leonard after her death, which meant she had to take excellent care of her body while she was still alive and not harm it in the slightest.

Victor just stared at her and said, deadpan, "I can't drive."

Lillian was slightly taken aback. "You can't drive?"

"Is that a mandatory life skill?" Victor asked.

Lillian shook her head. "It's okay, no one's going to laugh at you. The company has drivers. If you need a car, just call for one. Good night, Victor."

Victor frowned. "You said it's okay, but I detected a hint of mockery. After this project is finished, I'm going to learn how to drive and get my license."

Lillian gave him a thumbs-up and a smile, then hit the gas, the car speeding off into the distance.

Victor stood there, feeling like he'd just been dissed by the ace herself.

He was pretty sure that gesture was a thumbs-up, right? He couldn't have misread that too.

Victor couldn't figure out what was wrong with him today. He had doubted himself twice already.

It was too strange. Was he working too many hours, too tired?

Were his eyes really playing tricks on him?

When Lillian returned to Halfridge Villas, she was, as expected, met with a lecture from Leonard.

"Ms. Mercer, you promised not to work overtime. Allowing you two hours of work after you get home is already the biggest concession I can make.

When you work late at the office, you don't get your nutritious meals, you miss your post-meal supplements, and you forbid the staff here from bringing them to you. Do you have any idea how much you're mistreating your body?"

"It was just one time, it's fine," Lillian said. "Don't worry, I feel great today."

"Are you sure you want to go to the wedding tomorrow?"

"They wrote the invitation by hand and delivered it to me personally. The least I can do is show up.

In fact, I should probably prepare a grand gift, don't you think?"

Her understanding of Victor's abilities was limited to his prowess in programming. Anything else was a mystery to her.

Leonard added, "Ethan received an invitation too."

"But he's never had any dealings with the Mercer family before, has he?" Lillian asked.

"Apparently, everyone at your company received one."

Lillian was suddenly on edge. "Everyone?"

She usually only focused on her own work, with Ethan and Emma handling most other matters.

A few of the people who had helped her build Sebastian's company in the early days had also been brought back by Emma to help manage the new venture, allowing Lillian to concentrate on her areas of expertise with relative ease.

But she never paid attention to gossip, and the people at her company knew this, so no one would bring these things up to her.

It clicked. "No wonder everyone at the office has been whispering to each other the past few days, seemingly trying to avoid me. So this is why.

The Mercer family must be insane. They invited my entire staff. It looks like they still consider me one of them.

My company is their company.

My employees are the Mercer family's employees.

So when there's a celebration in the Mercer family, my employees should naturally be there to offer their congratulations.

How shameless!

I don't even need to ask. This has to be Sabrina's idea!"
