"He said there's been some functional deterioration that could lead to severe complications.
"Tell me, Brandon. How long has Grandma been sick?"
Brandon was caught off guard. "..." How did the conversation suddenly pivot to their grandmother?
He hesitated for a few seconds before answering. "Three years."
"Right," Lillian said sharply. "Three years.
"Ever since the day I went to prison and she fell down the stairs at the Mercer estate, she's been in a vegetative state.
"Three years, Brandon. Have you ever cared about her?
"Has Martin ever cared?
"Maybe when she was still under your control, you'd visit her—whether out of obligation or optics.
"But ever since I took her out of that place, has anyone in that house ever asked to see her?
"Or do you all think that being a vegetable is the same as being dead?
"If I hadn't brought her up just now, you'd probably forgotten she was even alive."
Silence hung heavy on the other end of the line.
Brandon had no defense.
It was true. They had been so consumed by their own ambitions that the old woman had completely faded from their minds.
After a long pause, he finally asked, "Lillian, if her condition is worsening, is there anything we can do?"
"Don't bother her," Lillian replied flatly.
And ended the call.
Brandon stared at his phone, a wave of disappointment washing over him.
His plan to use her hospital visit for PR was dead in the water.
He would have to find another angle.
