Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 407

“Martha, are you saying you want to go to jail with me? You’re not young anymore, and you’ve been by Grandma’s side for so many years without ever facing any hardship. Do you have any idea what prison is like?”

Martha couldn’t stop crying. “I don’t know what it’s like, but Miss Lillian, you’re sick. How will you manage in prison all by yourself?”

Lillian stepped forward and hugged her tightly. “Martha, thank you. Just knowing you feel this way means the world to me.

My father and brother have abandoned me, yet you’re willing to go to prison with me.”

“Miss Lillian, you’re the one who’s always had the best of everything. You’ve never had to endure anything like this.”

“Martha, I’m not going back to prison. I’m not going to be locked up again.

I didn’t do anything wrong. Someone else is at fault, but it was never me.

The last time, I was just too naive. When they all ganged up on me, I was so unwilling to accept it, thinking things would eventually turn around, that they would surely regret it.

But I understand now. It won’t happen. There will be no reversal, and no one genuinely cares about me.

So, this time, I won’t be foolish enough to let myself get sent back there again.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to prison, and neither are you.”

Martha wiped her tears and looked at Lillian. “Miss Lillian, are you telling the truth? But this time, that woman lost her baby. She won’t just let it go, will she? What if she insists on pursuing it? And your father is on her side, completely disregarding his own daughter.

He already kicked you out of the family for that woman. This time, he’ll definitely listen to her and come after you.”

Lillian nodded. “Martha, you did the right thing. All those things in the house were bought for me by Grandma. Bella has been squatting in my room for over two years; it’s about time she returned it.

I’ve explained everything to the police. You weren’t stealing or robbing. You’re not guilty of anything, so you can leave right now. And none of the things you’re afraid of will happen. Neither of us is going to jail. Trust me.”

Martha nodded. “Miss Lillian, you’ve changed. You finally know how to protect yourself.

It’s a shame we’re just servants. Our words don’t carry any weight, and no one at the Mercer estate would listen to us anyway.”

Lillian smiled faintly. “But Grandma used to listen. She would always listen to you carefully and help you with your troubles.”

“Yes, the old madam was the only one who truly cared about us, and you, Miss Lillian.”
