"I got chewed out for calling last night.
And we haven't seen Ms. Mercer's car return this morning, have we?"
"You're about to change shifts. Can you keep an eye out for us?"
"I'm afraid not, but I'll be back on duty before dinner.
I'm exhausted after pulling an all-nighter. Please, Messrs. Sirs, let me go home and get some rest. I'm really tired. I'll have my buddy here keep an eye out for you, okay?"
Though the words were acceptable, the brothers worried a replacement wouldn't be as diligent.
But they had no other choice.
What they didn't know was that even when Lillian returned from a trip, she wouldn't use the main gate.
A helicopter would land directly on the helipad on the hill behind the villa, and an elevator would take her down to the backyard garden.
With that mode of travel, there was no need to use the main entrance.
Brandon and his brother continued to wait, eating their lunch in the car.
By the afternoon, they still hadn't seen Lillian. Instead, they saw a large group from the Lancaster family coming out of Halfridge Villas.
The Lancaster family had made a trip back to Midvale this weekend, where the helicopter they ordered had been delivered.
After handling their business, they flew straight back on Sunday afternoon.
Though Lillian was away, she had already arranged a landing spot for the Lancaster's helicopter.
Someone from Halfridge Villas was there to receive them, but the Lancasters were disappointed they couldn't see Leonard again.
When Brandon saw the Lancasters coming out of Halfridge Villas, he felt like the security guard had played him for a fool.
If the Lancasters were inside, how could Lillian not be there?
But he couldn't take his anger out on the Lancasters. He just rushed forward to be obsequious.
"Mr. Clarke, sirs..."
Seeing his brother being so respectful, and having heard about how the Lancaster family was a dominant force in Midvale with deep pockets, Colin softened his attitude and greeted them as well.
Stephen was the most annoyed by these two brothers. They had such a wonderful sister but didn't cherish or protect her, choosing instead to protect the daughter of a homewrecker. The sight of them irritated him.
The elders were also displeased, merely grunting in acknowledgment.
Stephen, unhappy that the old men even bothered to respond, decided to cut through the pretense and expose them. "You two aren't here looking for Lillian to save the Mercer family, are you? Hoping she can take the fall for you one more time?"
