“A good balance of work and rest like I have now is actually better for me.”
Mr. Peregrine shook his head upon hearing this. “Yes, a balance of work and rest is correct. But you must still pay close attention to your rest, Ms. Mercer. Your health is your greatest asset.”
Stephen immediately grew agitated. “You hear that? You hear? Mr. Peregrine said so himself. Lillian, why don’t you do this—if you don’t want to go back to Midvale, that’s fine, but you must reduce your work hours. You’re a patient, after all. How can you compare yourself to healthy people?
“Most people in your company don’t even work overtime. Is your health better than everyone else’s?”
Lillian was at a loss. It was the busiest time for the company, and Stephen was demanding she reduce her workload.
If she cut back now, how would she ever get all the work done?
Seeing that Lillian wasn’t going to agree, Stephen grew desperate.
“Lillian, this is non-negotiable. Your health is the most important thing. I’m going to tell the family elders right now and see what they have to say.”
This time, Lillian didn’t hesitate. She immediately blurted out, “Stephen, don’t! I’m fine, aren’t I? Don’t get everyone involved and make them all worry about me.
“How about this? I’ll listen to you. I’ll reduce my work hours.
“For any work I can’t finish, I’ll hire more help. But my condition for agreeing is that this stays between you and me. You absolutely cannot let the family elders or other relatives know.
“If you tell them, you’ll really scare them.”
Stephen took a step back. With Mr. Peregrine here and knowing Lillian likely had other dedicated people looking after her, he decided not to worry the elders. Since she had finally agreed to compromise, he calmed down and accepted her terms.
“Alright, it’s a deal. From now on, your workday starts at eleven in the morning at the earliest, or maybe noon.”
