Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 624

That evening, the old man finished the chess game and went back to his room.

The Blakes' elderly couple always went to bed early. Sebastian couldn't bring himself to initiate the conversation, so he could only watch his parents retreat to their room before he sullenly returned to his own.

Old Mr. Blake got ready for bed, then leaned against the headboard, put on a pair of glasses, and picked up a chess manual from the nightstand.

Mrs. Blake lifted a corner of the quilt and got into bed.

Seeing her husband's calm expression, she couldn't help but speak. "That boy, Sebastian, has been coming home for two days straight. You haven't said a word. Aren't you worried you'll drive him crazy by keeping silent?"

Old Mr. Blake said, "The choice was his, the path was his, and the person was his own choosing.

"We were vehemently against it before, and you know how that turned out.

"Aren't the wedding preparations still in full swing? I'm sure that eager Miss Ward is actively pushing things along, afraid of any delay."

Mrs. Blake shot him a glare. "Aren't you worried the wedding might actually happen? The Blake family will truly become a laughingstock. In the future, no matter who brings it up, this will be a black mark on the Blake family's history."

Old Mr. Blake replied, "If he really marries her, then so be it. It's not our place to interfere anyway.

"We're old. How can we manage so many things?

"We tried to manage it before, and what was the result?

"This is the outcome he fought so hard to achieve. As his father, how could I disappoint him too much?"

Mrs. Blake sighed as well. "We told him long ago that with a mother like Bella's, this marriage was truly inappropriate, but he couldn't appreciate our intentions at all.

"Now, seeing the Mercer family in this state, he's probably having second thoughts. I'm afraid he already promised that Bella a number of things and now can't bring himself to call off the engagement. That's why he's hoping we'll be the ones to speak up and put a stop to it.

And the more obvious they were, the more embarrassing and awkward it made things.

Mrs. Blake understood this, which was why she had been resolute in not saying a word these past two days, much less bringing up the topic of the wedding.

It was Sebastian's own business, and he should be the one to make his own decisions.

Old Mr. Blake was also quite dissatisfied with his son. Handling things this way was something no one could respect.

"You're right. His resolve is wavering, but he doesn't want to bear the responsibility himself. That's why he's been coming home after work every day, hoping we'll be the ones to speak up and block his marriage.

"But we're deliberately not saying a word. He's the one who wanted to get married.

"He sees the situation clearly now. The Mercer family is no longer what it was back when their old matriarch was in charge. Martin isn't particularly talented, and his son is mediocre. It's pretty much impossible for them to advance any further."
