Professor Avery spoke up. "Everyone, let me introduce you. This is my ‘disappointing’ disciple. If I had known back then that she had a love-induced tumor growing in her brain, I would have performed a craniotomy to remove it myself."
As he said this, Professor Avery seemed to pointedly glance at the Blake couple.
They froze for a moment. Was he talking about Sebastian?
Old Mr. Blake and his wife had originally intended to bring their daughter-in-law in to introduce her to everyone.
They also wanted to help Lillian gain some recognition in this circle, giving her a better chance at development.
She was highly capable herself, and they believed she could establish a firm footing and build her own career.
Perhaps then, Sebastian would see her value, and the two powerhouses might find mutual respect, putting an end to any talk of divorce.
But to their surprise, before they could even introduce her, Professor Avery and his wife had already claimed the honor.
The other two couples immediately understood: this Ms. Mercer was both the Blake family's daughter-in-law and Professor Avery's disciple.
And Professor Avery had used the word "disciple," not "student."
That meant she is special.
She was most likely his special disciple, which meant she was undoubtedly brilliant.
"Professor, Mrs. Avery. Mr. Blake, Mrs. Blake," Lillian greeted them.
Lillian was determined to divorce Sebastian, so she had changed how she addressed the Blake elders.
Hearing her use such formal terms in front of others, the Blakes nearly lost their composure.
But having weathered many storms, they managed to remain steady, their expressions betraying no emotion.
Mrs. Blake said, "Lillian, this is Mr. and Mrs. Montrose from Sevria Bay. And over there are Professor Avery's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Prescott."
Lillian looked at the youngest couple at the table, who appeared to be in their fifties. Prescott?
Didn't Leonard call Mr. Avery 'uncle'?
Could it be...
Professor Avery glanced at Lillian, who had taken a seat between him and his wife, and whispered, "Those are that boy Leonard's parents. They wanted to meet you."
No wonder she had been summoned to this private dinner.
Lillian greeted everyone in turn.
Mr. and Mrs. Prescott simply nodded in acknowledgment.
But throughout the meal, no one explicitly mentioned their connection.
Looking at the Montrose couple, Lillian suddenly remembered something.
Weren't they the connection the Mercer family had been pressuring her to make?
She never thought she'd actually get the chance to meet them.
The Mercer family and Sebastian were on the same page, which meant Sebastian also wanted to connect with the Montrose family.
He apparently had no idea that Mr. Blake was already acquainted with them.
How amusing.
Then again, it made sense. Sebastian was just an illegitimate son. Although the Blake family's public face was now his, the old man was still alive. How could he possibly hand everything over to him?
