Emilia stared into Arthur's stern eyes.
It was glaringly obvious from his intense gaze that he knew exactly what had happened, but he was utterly terrified to say a word.
Whoever or whatever had enough power to silence a titan like Arthur Lister was definitely not your average corporate rival.
But...
Emilia lowered her gaze, a lump forming in her throat.
The man who died was her father.
When he died, her entire world had collapsed.
Even now, her relationship with her mother was nothing but awkward tension and unspoken resentment.
How could she possibly stop digging?
How could she just bury her head in the sand, pretend nothing had happened, and live out the rest of her life in blissful ignorance?
She couldn't do it.
But she also knew arguing with a sick, terrified old man would get her nowhere.
So, she smoothly pivoted the conversation.
Emilia looked up, a soft smile returning to her lips. She set the water glass aside and picked up an orange, meticulously peeling it.
"Arthur, right now, my only focus is figuring out this Aegis situation," she said calmly.
Arthur watched her peel the fruit, perfectly reading between the lines. She was absolutely going to keep investigating.
He gave a helpless shake of his head.
But deep down, he understood.
She was Inman's daughter, through and through.
They shared the exact same stubborn fire.
The thought brought him a strange sense of peace.
"There's something wrong with Aegis," Arthur finally admitted. "I don't have the specifics, but my sources tell me they never intended to go public with this new tech so soon. It was a panicked, last-minute decision."
"Figuring out why would take months of deep diving."
