Emilia lowered her eyes, returning the hug with a soft smile.
From everything she had seen over the past few weeks, Jayden was a solid guy who treated Joyce like gold.
Mrs. McCarthy probably just felt things were moving a little too fast and wanted to throw a stress test at him.
Emilia silently hoped Jayden would keep treating Joyce this well. Because if he ever broke her heart, Emilia would absolutely ruin him.
"Alright, stop overthinking it," Emilia said, pulling back. "A friend of mine took me to this amazing spa recently. We should go get facials. My treat."
"Hell yes!" Joyce bounced on her heels. "If you're paying, I'm in."
"I was always going to pay," Emilia laughed.
"Let me just go change and grab my stuff. Give me five minutes!" Joyce said, darting off to the locker room.
Emilia leaned against the wall to wait.
She pulled out her phone, texting Theodore to let him know she was spending the evening with Joyce and not to wait up for dinner. As she hit send, she glanced up and froze.
She recognized someone walking down the hall.
Her brow furrowed.
Flashing back to a confidential file she had reviewed recently, a cold sense of suspicion crept over her.
She shot a quick text to Joyce, then quietly trailed the figure.
Fifteen minutes later, Emilia returned, lost in thought about what she had just seen. Joyce was walking out of the locker room at the exact same time.
"That was fast," Joyce noted, looking surprised.
Emilia nodded. "Hey, when you have a second, can you run a background check on someone for me?"
Joyce looped her arm through Emilia's. "You're paying for the spa, so your wish is my command."
"I was always paying for the spa," Emilia teased, leading Joyce toward the elevator and out to her car.
...
The news that Aegis Dynamics had secured a massive overseas order broke at exactly eleven o'clock at night.
Due to the time zone difference, it was standard business hours abroad, so the timing of the deal itself wasn't suspicious.
