Chapter 274: Gabrielle

Aurora’s POV

"And why are you trying to go over the fence?" a soft voice asked behind me.

I spun around.

It was the blind girl.

My heart lurched. "I—I’m just trying to run away."

"Run away?" she repeated gently. "But why?"

"It’s a long story," I muttered, rubbing my arms. "I just... I need to get out of here right now. Do you know any other exits besides this wall?" I glanced up helplessly. "I can’t climb it."

"I’m sorry," she said. "Even though I know another exit, I can’t tell you. You’re trying to escape. Helping you would get me in trouble."

"Please," I begged.

I knelt to her level and grabbed her hands desperately. "Look at me. I’m suffering—"

"I can’t look at you," she interrupted. "I’m blind."

I froze, heat flooding my face. I stood up quickly. "Right. I’m sorry."

"It’s fine," she said softly. "I can still see you."

I blinked. "What? But you just said you’re blind."

"I am blind," she said. "I can’t see the way most people can. But I can see the things others can’t."

She tilted her head toward me. "I can see your energy... and it is faint. And Lucien is right. You are a woman."

My stomach dropped to my feet. God.

How many people had Lucien told already? He found out minutes ago and now half the High House probably knew. By tomorrow, the walls themselves might be whispering.

"Don’t worry," she added quickly. "I won’t tell anyone. Even without Lucien, I would have known."

"How?" I whispered.

"Your energy," she said calmly. "It’s obvious. You’re a witch."

My heart slammed against my ribs. "How do you know that?" I nearly shouted. "You— you’re not supposed to know that. How— you’re blind— how are you seeing all this?"

"I told you," she said, still calm, "I can see things most people can’t."

I panicked and grabbed her shoulders, pulling her closer as I clamped a hand lightly over her mouth. "Please," I whispered harshly. "You can’t tell anyone. If you say anything—"

She gently removed my hand. "I won’t tell," she said again, firmer this time. "Not even my mother. Lucien knows you’re a woman and he told me and Damien... but none of us know you’re a witch. That secret is safe with me."

Her voice softened. "You seem very powerful. Of all the witches I’ve sensed, your energy is different. Stronger. Brighter."

She lifted one hand and lightly touched the air near my hair, as if feeling an aura only she could see. "Your energy shines. And... it feels connected to mine."

I blinked rapidly. "Connected? How?"

"In a fascinating way," she said. "Like me and you... we have a history. Or will have."

She smiled softly — a knowing, unsettling, beautiful smile.

"I’m guessing that’s what your energy is telling me."

She held my hand suddenly, her blindfold turning toward my face.

"You and I," Gabrielle whispered, "are going to have a history together."

"History? I’m sorry, but how do you know that?" I asked, looking at her, trying to see if she was really blind or only pretending.

"I am Gabrielle, the park’s White Wolf," she said calmly. "I’m presuming you don’t know what a White Wolf is."

"A White Wolf? No, I don’t," I admitted.

She continued, "A White Wolf is a wolf that does not actually have a wolf spirit inside them. They are the wolf themselves. Do you know the term ’Moon Goddess’?"

"Yes," I said. "I’m very familiar with the Moon Goddess."

"I am... a mini Moon Goddess," she said softly. "Some call me the Moon Goddess herself. Some call me her incarnation. Some call me a miniature version. But all those names are only shades of the truth. Even I don’t fully know what I am. All I know is that I am connected to the Moon Goddess herself."
