Verity:
The mate ball would begin at the evening, and everyone would be dancing around till midnight.
When the full moon rose, mates would finally feel the mate bond.
I mean, those things were not for me.
After we marked our attendance, we left for our journey.
About an hour before midnight, I started to have a very bad feeling, like something was not right.
We had just driven out of the pack’s border, and immediately, it felt like something was off.
The road ahead looked abandoned, especially at night, considering it was rogue territory.
It was an avenue lined with woods on both sides.
"How long?" Ragnar asked the driver.
I turned my head toward him, then looked ahead again.
"It will take us a few more hours before we arrive at the Red Mist Pack," the driver responded.
Ragnar nodded.
He had been quite on edge throughout this trip, and I began to wonder if I liked the professional Ragnar more or this very unhinged, fidgety one.
He kept fixing his coat, stretching his neck, and cracking his knuckles.
Then he would shake his leg until midnight started to approach, and I realized why.
It hit me all at once, and I snapped my head toward him.
"Did you plan this?"
As soon as I asked him, he frowned at me. Only his eyes moved toward me.
"You know the monster attacks if somebody travels around midnight, right?" I said, disbelief evident in my tone.
"No, I did not. I did not travel just because of that," he answered, looking out the window.
"Just like you didn’t remember, I didn’t either," he said with a shrug.
Then he rested his head back, closing his eyes as if he were completely comfortable.
I stared at him in disbelief until it hit me.
He did not believe the sightings of the monster.
"Didn’t Alpha King Jaguar fight the monster too? Is it the same one?" I hissed.
I watched Ragnar’s face tighten even though he did not say a word.
He never opened his eyes, but the way his expression changed told me he was listening.
"You don’t believe it, do you?" I asked him, shocked by the fact that he probably did not even believe his own brother.
"Alpha King Ragnar, I’m speaking with you," I demanded because my heart was now thundering in my chest.
Him not believing it could cost me my life.
He had brought us down the same road where the monster had been sighted.
He slammed his hand on the seat, and my body jolted before he opened his eyes, ran his hand through his hair, and turned to me.
"What Jaguar fought was not just any monster," he hissed, making my eyes narrow at him.
"Then what was it?" I asked softly.
"It was a lycan."
My heart flipped when I heard that. It was as if finger-like creatures were crawling up and down my spine.
"So you know there is a monster, not just anything but a lycan, and yet you brought us here?" I asked in confusion.
"I didn’t. I just didn’t think it was true that it only traveled around midnight. When Jaguar was attacked, it wasn’t around midnight. So no matter what time we travel, if this thing wants to attack us, it will."
