Chapter244.
I wouldn’t play into their trap of self–incrimination.
It was useless; they’d believe what they wanted. My wolf snarled at their blatant disregard for the truth.
Jared stared, stunned. “The fire… wasn’t it an accident?
What criminal? Isabella, don’t talk nonsense!”
His genuine confusion was evident.
“Ask your brother, Andrew,” I sneered.
“But he might not tell the truth.”
Jared reeled.
“You… what did you say? That’s impossible! How could Emily do that?” He shook his head, unable to reconcile the image of his kind, frail sister with murder. Especially the murder of her own brother.
His wolf seemed to recoil from the idea.
Ignoring his turmoil, I declared, “From today, the Millers and I are sworn enemies!”
Jared trembled, his head snapping up. He’d thought my departure from the Silvermoon Pack was a tantrum.
But my words carried an unshakeable resolve. Sworn enemies.
I rolled up the window.“Grayson, let’s go.”
Jared watched us go, stunned.
He called Andrew, but the call went unanswered.
He stood in the parking lot, lost in thought, until his numb legs forced him back to reality. He walked mechanically back to the healing den. Caleb was moved to a private den.
Jared hurried there, his heart pounding.
The sight that greeted him froze him. Emily stood by Caleb’s sleeping form, her expression unreadable. But Jared felt a chilling aura radiating from her like a predator watching its prey. My wolf sent a shiver down my spine at this description.

Jared stopped, his voice raspy, “Emily?”
Emily stiffened, slowly turning. The coldness vanished, replaced by the familiar vulnerability Jared knew.
Tears welled in her eyes.
“Jared…” Her voice trembled.
Jared frowned, questioning the coldness he’d sensed.
He rubbed his eyes and looked again. She was the sister he knew, the one who needed protection. He walked forward. “How is Caleb?” he asked, his gaze fixed on Caleb’s pale face.
Emily bit her lip, her voice choked with sobs.
“The healer said… it’s not good… It’s all my fault. I hurt Caleb…”
Her wolf’s deceit felt almost palpable. My wolf sensed the elaborate charade.
