Chapter 44
I narrowed my eyes.
No records? My wolf sensed a deliberate cover–up.
“Yes, I heard pack elders held many meetings, deciding to suppress the matter, negotiating a settlement with the families involved.
They reached an agreement…”
Lucy’s scent shifted, her voice laced with disbelief.
That explains it! Emily’s hunting skills weren’t high enough for the Silvermoon Pack; she gained entry because of her brother!” My wolf felt a surge of understanding.
I survived, but I spent a moon cycle in the healers‘ den, so I didn’t know these things.
Lucy became more animated.
“Her hunting aptitude scores were over fifty points below the pack’s standards! But because of her brother, the pack admitted her against the established rules.”
Her scent expressed her growing shock.
Then she frowned, puzzled.
“But after she joined the pack, she received merit awards every moon cycle and won so many accolades; that doesn’t add up.” Her wolf was trying to piece together the puzzle.
I self–deprecatingly murmured.
“Because there was a fool covering for her; she didn’t hunt effectively and still received high accolades.” My wolf felt a pang
of resentment.
Every time, I was forced by my brothers to take the aptitude tests for Emily, and the evidence of my deception was erased by my brothers.
The excuse was that Emily was too sensitive; she couldn’t accept relying on others, so she needed the merit
awards.
But hunting was too challenging for her; the pressure was immense, and she grew weak and withdrawn.
Then they would bind me morally, saying Marcus saved my life, so I should support Emily.
What was wrong with me taking the test once? My wolf howled silently at the unfairness.
The conversation was a bit loud; Lucy didn’t hear my murmurs.
She patted my shoulder, full of trust.
“Isabella, hunt hard! This time for the final hunt assessment, you must excel and surpass that deceitful she–wolf!”

She was the pack’s scribe, so she knew more than others; she knew I was a top hunter who scored nearly a hundred points above the pack’s standards! My poor hunting performance was all Emily’s fault! My wolf roared its
agreement.
However, a few packmates nearby overheard their conversation and burst into mocking laughter.
Their scents were heavy with scorn.
Isabella? With her failing grades, she thinks she can surpass Emily?”
Dreaming.
Emily has been a full merit scholar for two moon cycles in a row!” Their words were a sting, but
defiant.
