Every word I spoke was a blade twisting in Carson’s heart.
First love, illegitimate pup, a switched pup… It was a cruel and ugly truth.
Gavin had been a fraud from the start.
“Huh!” All color drained from Carson’s face.
He swayed, then collapsed back onto the sofa, looking like he’d aged ten years in an instant.
He covered his face, hot tears leaking through his fingers.
His wolf was wounded and confused.
“It’s my fault…” his voice was hoarse, filled with unspeakable regret.
“I failed to protect your mother… I failed to protect that pup…”
My heart ached with his pain.
I knelt down, watching his shoulders shake, my own voice breaking.
“Uncle, this isn’t your fault.
It’s Gavin–he fooled all of us!”
“How dare he! We, the Silvermoon Pack, helped him so much, and this is how he repays us? How could he switch
out my sister’s pup?” He supported his head with his hand, his body wracked with immense pain.
“So where’s my real nephew… my real nephew…” His voice trailed off, laced with despair.
“Is… is he still alive?”
A newborn switched like that–what chance did he have? The thought weighed on both of us.
My wolf felt a surge of protective sadness for the lost pup.
I was also in pain.
In my past life, I’d died without knowing this secret.
Now, knowing it, I was equally helpless.
Just then, a sharp, insistent ring sliced through the sadness.
Carson seemed oblivious, lost in his torment.
I answered the communicator.
It was Andrew.
I handed it to Carson.

He glanced at the name, his eyes practically spitting fire.
He snatched the communicator and answered.
“Uncle,” Andrew’s voice, still respectful, came from the other end.
But the word ignited Carson’s fury.
“Don’t call me uncle!” he roared into the communicator.
“I’m not your uncle! You don’t deserve it!” He slammed the communicator down, about to throw it across the
room.

“Uncle!” I quickly grabbed his hand.
His chest was heaving, eyes red like a cornered wolf.
I held his hand tight, forcing myself to stay calm.
“Uncle, listen to me,” my voice was soft, soothing.
“I know you’re hurting, and you’re angry.
But right now, we can’t let our emotions take over.”
Carson glared at the communicator, breathing hard.
I looked at him, speaking each word deliberately.
“The odds are slim, but what if… what if my brother is still alive?” I said this not because I truly believed my brother was alive, but because it might offer him some solace.
“If we want to find him, the only clues are with the Miller pack, with Gavin.
I’ve already burned that bridge–I can’t go back and dig for information.”
I looked at him, my gaze firm.
“It has to be you, Uncle.
You have to calm down and listen to what Andrew has to say.
Maybe we can find a clue from him.” That was the only way he could see that Andrew and Wendy were plotting to take down the Silvermoon Pack!
Knowing our single dads were craving intimacy after too long alone, my best friend and I hatched a plan. During our wilderness rafting trip, we’d “swap” dads, reminding them of youthful passion and chasing away their loneliness…..
