Chapter 531

I whirled around, storming out of my room and marching straight to Lola’s door on the second floor. My wolf was pacing in my mind, her silver tail lashing with fury at the scent of the intruder still clinging to my den.
I didn’t knock. I just twisted the runic doorknob.
The door was locked with a territorial ward.
I pulled out a thin, sharpened bone–pick, remembering a trick one of the rogue omegas had taught me in my past life during my time in the shadow–dens. It made quick work of Lola’s lock, the mechanism clicking open with a submissive snap.
‘Ah! A sharp gasp ripped through the room.
I found Lola, her lunar bone–violin poised, attempting to play from the blood–inked sheet music.
The sudden sound of the door opening startled her so badly that the parchment slipped from her trembling hands, hitting the stone floor with a soft thud! My wolf narrowed her eyes, catching the scent of my own soul–essence on that paper.
She spun around in a panic, her eyes locking with my icy stare. The violin in her hands trembled, the strings humming with her nervous energy, almost slipping from her grasp.
My gaze flickered past her, landing on the sheet music splayed across the carpet.
Lola immediately crouched down, snatching the music and tucking it into her sleeve, her wolf whimpering internally.
The pieces were clearly too good. She hadn’t even had time to copy them onto a secondary crystal or destroy the original before she’d given in to her greed and started playing directly from it.
What she hadn’t expected, despite locking the door with a ward, was that I’d still managed to bypass her defenses.
Give it back to me.” My voice was calm, but laced with the potent pressure of my Alpha–born heritage.
Lola’s face instantly drained of color, turning as pale as a winter moon, but she quickly regained her composure.
She couldn’t admit it.
If she did, her status in the pack was finished.
W–what are you talking about? Give what back?” Lola feigned ignorance, meeting my gaze, though her pupils were dilated with fear. “What are you ven saying? This is my… my own composition. I was just about to use it for the Great Lunar Melodic Rite.”
You wrote it?” I let out a short, cold laugh, my fangs momentarily pricking my lower lip. “Lola, say that again if you dare. Let the Moon Goddess hear your lie.‘
I wrote them!” Lola shrieked, visibly squirming as my Alpha aura began to weigh down the air in the room. “What gives you the right to say I stole nything? Where’s your proof under the Ancient Treaties?”
Proof?” I scoffed, taking a deliberate step forward, my hunting boots clicking sharply against the floor. “You broke into my den, stole my soul–work, and now you’re demanding proof?”
The door burst open and Wendy stormed in, her scent of sharp lavender and aggression filling the space. Her eyes instantly locked onto Lola, who was >acked into the corner, her own eyes rimmed with red.
Isabella!‘ Wendy roared, darting forward to yank Lola behind her, shielding her like a protective dam. “What in the Goddess’s name are you doing
10w?!”
Her backup had arrived. Lola’s tears instantly welled up and spilled over. She clutched Wendy’s sleeve, sobbing, “Mommy… Sister Isabella burst in, aying I stole her music… but I wrote them myself during the last full moon…”
Wendy pulled her daughter even tighter, a fierce, protective maternal instinct flaring in her eyes. When her gaze met mine again, they were like shards of obsidian ice.
‘She wrote it?” I stared at the mother and daughter, a bitter laugh bubbling up in my throat. “Her? She couldn’t even dream of writing a soul–piece like this. Her wolf doesn’t have the depth.”
My words landed like a sharp slap across Wendy’s face.
‘Enough!” Wendy practically vibrated with rage, her hackles metaphorically rising. “Isabella, I know you resent Lola, just because I took her in as my daughter, but you can’t accuse her of something like this! I know my daughter’s spirit, and she would never steal anything!”

Her eyes, sharp as hunter’s knives, fixed on me. “It’s you who needs to stop constantly targeting Lola just to get attention from the Alpha Council!”
“Get attention?”
I repeated the words, my voice low, as if I’d just heard the most ridiculous howl imaginable.

I couldn’t be bothered to waste another second arguing with her. My gaze slid past Wendy, locking directly onto Lola’s tear–streaked face, which was painted with feigned innocence.
“I’ll say this one last time.” My voice was low, but every word cut through the air, carrying a chilling warning that made the hair on Lola’s arms stand up. “You’d better not use that sheet music at the Rite. Or else, you won’t be able to handle the consequences when the Truth–Bond is invoked.
Lola flinched under my gaze, instinctively shrinking behind Wendy. Yet, she still tried to sound defiant. “I… I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m going to use my own piece for the competition!”
“Good. Very good.”
I nodded, didn’t say another word, and turned to leave. My wolf was quiet now, a deadly, predatory stillness settling over her.
I didn’t spare a single glance back, my departure resolute.
As I walked away, I noticed Wendy finally letting out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She pulled a still–trembling Lola into a comforting embrace.
“Don’t be scared, Lola,” Wendy said softly. “Mom’s here. No one’s going to bully a Miller daughter.”
Lola burrowed into Wendy’s arms, but I caught a flicker of triumph in her eyes through the mind–link’s peripheral edge.
I could tell she thought Wendy would always take her side in a Pack trial.
And I knew exactly what she was thinking: Who does Isabella think she is? Just empty threats from a discarded mate!
I watched as her eyes darted to the fallen sheets, a flicker of something–panic, then cunning calculation–crossing her face. I knew exactly what she was thinking: the score wasn’t registered on the Howlnet yet.
Her mind was already racing, I could feel it, plotting her next move. She’d register it immediately, claim it as her own by blood–mark. And then, what could I possibly do to stop her?
Lola quickly reassured Wendy, who had been hovering nervously nearby, then practically sprinted back to her runic terminal.
Even as her hands trembled, I knew the real horror: she’d been inputting the music’s details into the International Howlnet Registry, shamelessly engraving her own name in the “composer” field.
The name that appeared on screen was Lola.
Then she clicked ‘Submit.”
A pop–up flashed on the screen: [‘Deep Echoes‘ successfully registered! Composer: Lola. Blood–Mark: Verified.]
I watched her stare at those words, a twisted, triumphant smile finally spreading across Lola’s face.
I knew Miles’s injuries from the car accident–the one caused by that rogue ambush–were almost fully healed after nearly a lunar month of recovery in the healing vats.
Finally, he would be able to go see the maternal High Alpha Grandfather he’d never met.
I later learned that over at the Grant Pack Mansion, Grandpa Grant had been up since the first light of the morning, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the grandson who had been lost to their bloodline for so long.
I remembered how heartbroken Grandpa had been, falling ill and his wolf growing weak after discovering his daughter’s deception at the hands of those low–born rogues.
Miles had gotten into that terrible accident protecting me right after he’d returned to the territory. We’d been terrified the news would be too much for Grandpa’s aging heart to bear, so we’d kept it a secret from him, spinning a story about Miles being on a temporary diplomatic mission to the Northern Packs, unable to come home just yet.
He had no idea Miles had been recuperating in the healing chamber right next door all this time.
The moment Grandpa’s gaze landed on his long–lost grandson, his eyes immediately welled up, bright red with an overwhelming surge of Alpha
emotion.

He gripped Miles’s hand tightly, his gaze sweeping over him from head to toe, checking for the strength of his frame, a tremor in his voice as he kept murmuring, “Good, good…. It’s so good you’re back. So good you’re finally home in the pack–lands…”
This was the male who had commanded Pack Councils and dominated the trade territories for a lifetime, yet in this moment, he was overcome, trembling with an emotion so raw it made him seem like a yearling pup.
The rest of us gathered around, a silent testament to our shared relief. Miles gently patted Grandpa’s shaking back, and I leaned in, murmuring soft. comforting words to steady the elder’s spirit.
Slowly, Grandpa’s overwhelming emotion subsided, allowing us all to finally settle around the long dining table in the Great Hall, a quiet sense of peace settling over the territory.
He’d had Miles sit beside him, immediately fussing over him and showering him with heartfelt affection as the heir apparent.
With a warm chuckle that vibrated through the room, Grandpa Grant had asked, “I heard you’re quite taken with that young she–wolf from the Riley Pack. If you decide to form a blood bond with her, your grandpa will personally go to their Alpha to propose the alliance on your behalf! We’ll make sure it’s an absolutely grand Rite!”
Miles had simply smiled and agreed. “Okay.”
Grandpa Grant had become even more delighted, nodding repeatedly. “My grandson’s future mate, a new member of the Grant lineage, deserves a welcome gift that’s absolutely one of a kind! We’ll have to prepare something truly special from the ancestral vaults!”
His joyous laughter echoed throughout the dining hall, filling the space with his happiness.
saw Wendy, sitting beside me, listening intently to the High Alpha. Her smile, which had been plastered on her face like a mask, began to falter.
It was the same old story.
could practically taste her resentment in the air–it smelled like charred wood. All the pack’s affection was still poured into the Grant family’s daughter vho had passed into the Moon Goddess’s arms too young.
The words hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of my mother’s absence and the constant, bitter undercurrent it created. She’s dead, so it all goes to her pups! The pronouncement, though unspoken, felt less like a statement of fact and more like an accusation against Wendy’s starus.
Even Miles’s potential mate, someone who didn’t even exist yet, was already getting such a solemn promise from the High Alpha.
And her own Lola? Nothing. I could practically see the resentment burn in Wendy’s eyes, her pupils narrowing into slits.
could feel a knot of resentment tighten in Wendy’s chest. Her hand, gripping her silver cutlery, clenched almost imperceptibly, yet she managed to eep her inner wolf in check.
With a subtle intake of breath, she smoothed her expression back into a polite smile, skillfully redirecting the conversation.
Father,” she began, her voice sweet as nectar, ‘speaking of good news, our Lola has some exciting news herself.”
fer gaze shimmered with pride as she continued softly, “Lola, with her incredible talent, has made it to the finals of the Vienna International Melodic Lite. The competition is in just a few days. We should all go to the neutral territory to cheer her on, shouldn’t we?”
